I have decided to build a Savage 10 in a 6.5 creedmoor and for the base of my build have found the walmart special to start with, at one store there is a 10xp in .308 for $447 and is the short action then on the other hand another walmart has a 110xp in the 7mm mag long action but its discounted for $397.
would it be worth saving a few bucks getting the 110 over the 10? can you change the longer bolt actioned 110's bolt face of .535" to the shorter action's size of .475"? or would it come out costing the same and being less of a headache just getting the 10xp. I will just add the 6.5 barrel at a later time just trying to get started on it.
Thanks

The one benefit of having the longer action is later I can go 300WM or 300UM, 30-06 and so on....

Thought about that but @ $343 plus S&H and a $35 ffl transfer.... Ill be in it $400, isnt the accutrigger better than a stock trigger?

The long action will give you more options for sure down the road. The Accu-trigger is nice, if you like it (some don't). An aftermarket will run you about $100. I've done a few Stevens build and always replaced the trigger from jump. I got my first Accu-trigger in LRP and have it say it is nice. I really like 2 stage triggers and the take-up in the Accu-Trigger reminds me kind of like the 2-Stage on my AR10.

Ok, before I jump the gun here, does anybody make a 6.5 creedmoor barrel with the Large shank?

Yup...Criterion, Shilen, McGowen, and most everybody else.

You just won't find many large shank barrels sitting on the shelf at NSS or other retailers as large shank actions are a small portion of the Savage market relative to small/standard shank actions. They'll be special order propositions with 8-12 week lead times.

Is the LRP large shank? Jim at NSS sells LRP barrels. Its 24 or 26" long 1" bull with fluring.

Re: savage 110xp or 10xp for 6.5 cm build

why would you need an large shank? if you go with the Savage 10 or 110 they are small shank. if you go with the Stevens models they are small shank.

and NSS has small shank barrels for the 6.5cm in stock as well as long and short actions with or without the accu-trigger if you wish to start from scratch.

with the Bud's specials you get free shipping!

Re: savage 110xp or 10xp for 6.5 cm build

I'm not sure what the shank size is on the 7mm mag, I'm gonna go look at it tonight but from what I was told, I guess it's most likely gonna be the small shank. I will find out here shortly when I get off work, I'm hoping it is the smaller size so barrels will be easier to come by.

Re: savage 110xp or 10xp for 6.5 cm build

Ptg is making a savage bolt head that is trued and looks nice. If u go the 7 mag route and need a .475" bolt head that would be a nice option. Nss carries quite a few large shank barrels, problem is they are usually bull contour 28&30" barrels. The large shank sporter's are usually hunting mag calibers.

Re: savage 110xp or 10xp for 6.5 cm build

Ok, got there and looked over the savage and it was the small shank, told the lady " I'll take it " and her reply was, What caliber? I thought that price was only for the 7mm but thought what the heck.... asked what calibers were available and low and behold. A .270, no short actions but with the .270 I won't have to change the bolt head nor anything in the mag. SCORE!!!!!
The bolt was even jewelled, never had thy before, how long before that's worn off

Re: savage 110xp or 10xp for 6.5 cm build

What is the most favored barrel, I have a .300WM with a Douglas bull barrel and like it, has the recessed crown, but I bought the gun with it already on it.
It seems the 2 names I see allot are Shilen and Lilja, just testing the waters to see what others like
