I've been reading Snipers Hide for, well, a long time, haha. I finally joined a couple months ago, but until today, have stuck to reading. (The whole "two ears, one mouth" thing...I stick to that. Or in this case, two eyes.)

I've been into shooting for as long as I can remember, and finally decided to put together a precision rifle. Last week, I got a hold of AJ at Bighorn Arms, and in 6 to 8 weeks, I will have myself an action! I also talked to Mark Chanlynn, and AJ will be sending my action to him to get a barrel. Right now I'm thinking .308, 22", Palma contour.

The barreled action will be going in a McRee's chassis, with an SWFA 5-20x50, American Rifle Co rings, and Atlas bipod.

As long as AJ and Mark are on time, I should have everything by the time I go on leave in December. Then I get to bolt it all up, and SHOOT!

Build complete! Here are some photos (not the best). I am extremely pleased with how this rifle turned out.

Thanks to:
AJ Goddard (Bighorn Arms)
Mark Chanlynn (Rocky Mountain Rifle Works)
Tim and Karen at Idaho Armory
Scott Mcree
Hellbender for the scope

Re: New Guy...New Build

Fine action, great stock, it should be a shooter, any idea what barrel maker you are going with?. I am a big fan of the Palma contour, have a 243 26" 5C Broughton with the medium Palma contour, not too heavy but heavy enough.

Welcome to the hide. I know you are going to be VERY pleased with you choice

. I know them both and have seen their work and have shot against it. They both know what it takes to build a shooter. I will be using their equipment on my next .338LM as soon as AJ builds his Magnum action built and will try to talk Mark into building it for me

. Congrats on your selection and let us know how it shoots!

Re: New Guy...New Build

My action should be getting sent to Chanlynn in 2 or 3 weeks. I have a question regarding chambering.

I would like to be able to experiment with bullets ranging from 155's up to the 208 Amax. Will a "standard" .308 chamber be this flexible?

A standard 308 chamber will be able to do this; however, most guys interested in running the heavier 30 cal bullets would opt to have a longer throat so that the bullet is not jammed so far into the case.

Re: New Guy...New Build

Can anyone with a Bighorn tell me how long the magwell opening is? I was looking at the Alpha mags, and it would be nice to be able to run the Type 2's (2.985 OAL).

Re: New Guy...New Build

Talked with Mark on Tuesday. Barrel is installed on the action, and will be shipped to my FFL as soon as I send payment.

Question: What trigger should I go with? I know Jewell is one of the best, but I've heard they can be finicky when it comes to dirt and grime. Timney? Rifle Basix?

Re: New Guy...New Build

I only have experience with the Timney. Its creep free, breaks clean, adjusts easy, and works, no cleaning no lubing. I've had zero issues with it, when its not frozen here its either sloppy wet or incredibly dusty.
Sounds like a nice build.

Re: New Guy...New Build

I've had good luck with both Rifle Basix and Huber triggers. I had a Jewell that shit the bed after blanking a primer so I sent it in for repairs and sold it the day after I got it back. It did have a nice crisp break but, it broke.

Re: Bighorn/Chanlynn build complete!

Looks great! Is that the standard or heavy Palma barrel? Looking to build a Bighorn 6.5 x47 Lapua with a 24" barrel in April. What would you estimate the weight of the barreled action at?

Thanks

Re: Bighorn/Chanlynn build complete!

That's a really nice rifle. I hold AJ's actions in high regard, I love mine and my friends that have shot my rifle liked it enough to order actions of their own.

I have no doubt you're going to love that rifle. Mine's a 6.5 Creedmoor and I just can't shoot it enough.

I believe it is the heavy Palma...I'm not sure what Mark considers it. I would estimate the barreled action somewhere between 6 and 7 pounds.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to do a detailed range report for a while. It will likely be a few months before I'm home again.

The few rounds I did put through it, I was shooting around 3/4-1MOA, with no rear bag or monopod. With some form of butt support, and a little more trigger time, I have no doubt it will be a sub 1/2 minute gun.

Those groups I was getting were 2 or 3 rounds through the same hole, with a round or two just outside to open them up...so, me.

Re: Bighorn/Chanlynn build complete!

Love the SH Google search function!

Anyway, I am working on a very similar build. I have a .264" Bartlein blank I'm going to chamber in 6.5CM and want to go with a Big Horn Action too in my McRees chassis. BUT, I was reading Bighorn's site and it said their actions (tactical SA) are .300" longer so a mod to your stock would need to be made. Cutting it out farther, and filling in behind. I assume they mean in fiberglass stocks.

Did you have to do this with the McRees chassis too? Obviously you're rocking a Bighorn action in a McRees chassis, but I'm wondering if your gunsmith had to modify it and how they did it.

Thanks.

Re: Bighorn/Chanlynn build complete!

Give Mcree's a call. He may have the +.300 center sections in stock. Personally, I ordered mine from Idaho Armory. If I remember correctly, it was AJ at Bighorn who pointed me to them.

Re: Bighorn/Chanlynn build complete!

Thanks. I've already got a chassis though. I'll have to ask around to see if it can be made to work with what I've got.

Re: Bighorn/Chanlynn build complete!

AJ at Bighorn can make you an action that is a drop in clone of the Rem 700 footprint (.300 shorter than his standard). AJ made me a short action tactical that dropped right in to my KMW Sentinel stock with integrated mounting block with no mods to the chassis. He also has some new actions coming soon that have an integrated recoil lug in the 700 footprint. I just placed an order for my 2nd Bighorn, this one with integral lug to drop into an AICS AX chassis.

Re: Bighorn/Chanlynn build complete!

Sweet build. Post some groups!

Re: Bighorn/Chanlynn build complete!

COfox: If you already have a Mcree chassis, you can order just the center section, and use the rest of your parts on that.
