Anyone got any views on good shooting tripods and tripod rifle rests that will work well with AICS and M40A3 rifles 308/300WM/338?

+1 on the above!! I have been running Danel's tripods/cradles for a long time now and they are first rate all around (as is the man...and woman...behind the scenes). The Medium is arguably the most versatile in my experience. For your stated rifles, the SSP-1 cradle will work on all. Personally, I run the SSP-2 (wider) cradle as I often use it with other rifles that won't quite fit in the smaller one...better to have a little extra room in the cradle and not need it than to need it down the road and not have it!

PRS makes a great product and sharon is excellent to work with. the AICS works best with the narrow cradle.

If you have a tripod already and you are looking for a great tripod head then look at the HOG saddle they rock.
If you are looking for a full unit I havce two units I am not using that I have up for sale here at the below links.

Make no mistake...the tripods and heads like Nomad has available are VERY nice pieces of kit, as are the Hog Saddles as also mentioned. I have used them all and they all have their particular ups/downs, as well as uses. It all comes down to your particular needs/wants and budget. If you want to keep it on the REALLY cheap, but still useful/effective, there are also some great DIY options if you have the time, inclination, and abilities to put them together.

I went both to PRS and Hog Saddle. Hog Saddle suggested Monfrotto tripods specifically either the 190 or 055 models. They suggested a magnesium ball head. However, the price for all this was just too much for me so I decided to go half way and get the PRS tripod with SSP2, some of the extras and also a Hog Saddle. Even this comes well over $500, using the suggested Monfrotto tripod would have put the cost at near $1K. Bit too much for me at this time. Hog Saddle indicated that the US!C like the Monfrotto 055 with mag ball. Thought others might be interested in the info I was sent from Hogs Saddle - below

Here are four great tripods to check out. I prefer the 055 models because they manage recoil better but the 190 models are lighter and cheaper.

get the vanguard GH100 ballhead with pistol grip if you're mounting the rifle. Very nice to mount spotting scopes to as well.

The Hog Saddle is well worth the price!
Slap it on a Manfrotto 055PROB without the ball head. Works just fine!
You wont be disappointed.

Ditch the ball head and save a hundred bucks and change.

I have the PRS large set up with the SSP-1 that I use with my AX chassis and couldn't be happier. You can rest your bino's or spotting scope in it and it's really quite stable.

I like my PRS as it is a nice light weight tripod. However I recently learned how stable you can be whenb utilizing a heavy duty tripod (Manfrotto). Manfrotto will be my next purchase.

I have the triclawps (similar to the Hog Saddle) on top of a Velbon Sherpa 600R tripod. I love the combo, it's relatively inexpensive and works. You can use this tripod way down low in prone position all the way to standing.
In sitting and standing I use a stoney point bipod to stabilize the rifle's rear which really helps a lot.
