new to 50 bmg

Re: new to 50 bmg

Start with a short action cartridge and take it to 1000 yards and beyond before moving up to .50BMG.

Crawl, walk, run.

Re: new to 50 bmg

Didn't think it was fair to shoot a 50cal at anything under 1000 yards. Big difference in 500 to 1000 yards and even bigger difference beyond that. Way more than just getting behind the trigger and aiming at the target. You're 300 would be good practice to beyond 1000 and give you good cheap(er) practice before you start sending ten dollar bills downrange.

Have fun

Sell it and get something else. The fifties can be addictive. Welcome to the addiction.

Re: new to 50 bmg

Load your own ammo and you can load a round for $3-4 or less if you wanted to use military surplus.

Re: new to 50 bmg

Some good general advice is to try and find someone to go shooting with as they can help you read the wind.

I try to go shooting every weekend so does get expensive. I usually shoot about 10-20 rounds so at at say $4 a pop that gets to be an expensive hobby. When you compare it to going out drinking or eating out as a lot of people do it's all relative.

And don't just not go shooting when the wind is blowing 10-20 MPH. A lot of folks can shoot when there is little to no wind. Being able to read the wind is what sets us apart.

Re: new to 50 bmg

would love to go with someone. anyone around alabama would be greatfull if someone could teach me some stuff

Re: new to 50 bmg

have a mutual conection with local ammo company can get 100 rds anything i want for about $250 bucks cant reload for that price and lets me shoot more not worth buying all the reloading stuff for it.

Barrett puts on a long range course that is dedicated to the 50s you may want to go to their web site and take a look at the course and the dates they put on the class

They prefer you to use a Barrett rifle for their course in case something goes wrong it can be fixed easier. They will take a person with another brand rifle though.

Re: new to 50 bmg

You should join the FCSA they will teach you everything you need to know and you will get started off right.

+1 on teh FCSA. Also wait for good deals on components if you are going to reload. I will tell you it will run you a min on $700 to $800 to load your first round if you go retail and buy the cheapest equipment. Won't even tell you what I got into mine but my press alone was $1300. Here is one of my seater dies. That is one of those tiny .308 dies next to it.

If you shop around you can get a Lee press & dies for the .50 for about $195. Not top of the line but plenty good enough to start. I have seen them on eBay and at Graf's for that price.

Re: new to 50 bmg

David i live in north alabama not to far from birmingham and also struggle to find somewhere to shoot hte 50 we shoot some at my farm but are limited to 400 yards if you find somewhere worth going close spread hte word everywhere i find wont let you shoot the 50's

Re: new to 50 bmg

My advise is to stock up on reloading components. My guess is that 50cals will probably be banned very very soon

Re: new to 50 bmg

new huh ? lol.

your friend will sell you 50 cal rounds for 2.50 each ? LOL , you'll end up with 5 foot groups at 1000y.

personally , i wouldnt put my safety in the hands of my friend...

Re: new to 50 bmg

We had to modify both the Lee sizer and seater but the kit overall is pretty good. A lathe and someone that knows how to run it is all that's needed. Had to modify the seating stem to work with the AMAX bullet and take material off the bottom of the sizer to get it to size M2 fired brass down to the FA spec.

why are there so many a-holes on this forum that must try to degrade anyone that does not use the same stuff they do? do you stop on the side of the road when some old lady has a flat tire just to say "you stupid bit** you should have bought a more expensive tire" or do you offer to change it for her? this is what is wrong with the world today. i joined this forum for a little advice and thought i might find a few people that share my same intrests a few i have but all the posts i read end up like this one. someone thinks they know everything there is to know abought shooting and they try to tell you that you know nothing and will never know as much as they do. very disappointed that these few people will be the demize of us all. im sure they will reply with some B S but just let them all know it will fall on deaf ears. thanks to all that have gave me some insite on the 50 bmg because i am done with snipers hide thanks and merry x mas
