My search fu is laking so figure to just come out and ask.
Have a 700 SPS 308 with the X Mark Pro trigger. Its not bad but it can definitely be better.
So what is a good trigger that I can install myself that isnt too expensive? Figure $100-150 range.

This would be for hunting, target practice and long range shooting. Not competition though.

Replaced the factory heavy trigger on the wife's SCAR16 with a Geissele and her accuracy improved as she was able to concentrate on the shot and not the trigger.
So am wanting to do something similar here.

What pull weight would you guys recommend for this purpose?

Re: Hunting/tactical trigger for Rem 700?

510 with 2.5 lbs is a good combo

Re: Hunting/tactical trigger for Rem 700?

I have a Jewell in mine and it's perfect.
I have a Rifle Basix in a Nosler 280 AI that was factory installed.

It is a very good trigger and I have it set at 2.5lbs.
Breaks like glass, zero creep.
If they are in the price range, at least based on my sample of one it's good to go. I haven't heard of anyone complaining about the triggers in the Nosler TGR rifles on the Nosler forum either...

Somewhere between 2.5-3.5lbs, maybe a little heavier, depending on you.
Remember, adrenaline, gloves, and enviromental factors can all desensitize a bit, field conditions aren't the same as range for most of us, and you want enough to require a definite pull if barely.

It may be worth a chat w/ your smith to see what he could do for your factory trigger. $100 or less may give you what you're looking for.

But would it be worth throwing money at the x mark trigger?
If the Timney and Rifle Basix are around $130 or so seems that would be a better investment.

Leaning more towards the Rifle Basic as it seems to come with a smooth trigger.
The one big thing that I do like on the x mark is the smooth trigger. My older sendero has a grooved trigger and it doesnt 'feel' right. Though its the only weapon I have with a grooved trigger.

Re: Hunting/tactical trigger for Rem 700?

The Timney is the most reliable for a aftermarket trigger. However you can't beat a tuned R700 trigger. I would buy an old style R700 trigger and send it out to a good smith to have the internals stoned and tuned. It will cost about $75 plus the cost of the old style trigger. I personally wouldn't waste my time or money on a Xmark. Sell it for $40 after you replace it.

Re: Hunting/tactical trigger for Rem 700?

Put the heavy trigger back in and see how her grouping is. I'll bet it's will be worse than prior to putting in the light trigger.

What your wife needs to do is to work on trigger control...a lighter trigger isn't going to help that. Issues such as inconsistent pressure, rolling pad of the finger, jerking instead of pressing are generally still present.

I'd suggest getting the trigger set to a nice 6# and work on her trigger control skills. Once she learns proper from, she'll be able to accurately shoot any trigger, not just a light one.

As to which one? If all you're spending is 150 bucks on a trigger, just stick with the factory trigger...very little work goes into make an original factory 700 trigger nice and crisp.

Re: Hunting/tactical trigger for Rem 700?

In your price range I give the nod to Shilen. Thin smooth trigger face. Never have cared much for timney triggers, I've had a few in the past for a couple different rifles and they were little if any improvement from what could be done with a factory trigger. However that POS X mark on the new remingtons is a lost cause. I wouldn't waste time or money trying to improve it.

Re: Hunting/tactical trigger for Rem 700?

Just bought a Timney this past week and installed it few nights ago, havent fired a live round yet, but after dry firing SEVERAL times, I am in love and the XMark feels like total garbage in comparison...

Got it from MidwayUSA for $124

Re: Hunting/tactical trigger for Rem 700?

Lots of good info to think on.
Thanks

Oh, any recommendations for a smith to work on an older 700 trigger?

Re: Hunting/tactical trigger for Rem 700?

don't know anyone in your area off the top of my head.

Bobby Pitchford in Waller Texas 936.372.9017 - I've worked with him before, he's very good.

Briley MFG in Houston Texas 713-932-6995

C. Dixon on here

There are dozens of gunsmiths that can work that trigger over...I'm sure there is someone close to you

Re: Hunting/tactical trigger for Rem 700?

I have tried several different Remington 700 triggers and the Rifle Basix were very good and at one point less expensive than the others out there. If money is not a problem the Huber Concepts 2-stage triggers are amazingly smooth and crisp. I have one in my R-5/AICS chassis rifle. Everyone who has tried shooting the Huber came off the gun saying how incredibly smooth and crisp the trigger is.

HTH!
