New Model 700's

Re: New Model 700's

The Model 700s produced prior to about 2000 would be my preference.

It just seems to me that the changes made (the J-lock and the later trigger) weren't necessary, and made a good rifle less useful.

The newer ones do seem to have that mass produced look and feel to them, but most of them seem to shoot ok, I would look for a well kept used rifle and pay close to new price before buying a brand new Rem

+1 I remember the key for bolt, and the xmk, then xmk pro. I have my 2000 model's trigger breaking at 2lbs consistent, and my xmkpro is at 2.7-3.2lbs. The 5R is the biggest improvement I have seen, but all seem to shoot sub moa with good reloads.
But the main thing is that you have a perfect platform for a custom build, after you shoot the brrl out, and tons of after mkt products. It's the 10/22 & AR of the Bolt guns.
Having said that, ifI had to pick 1 rifle I had to keep stock, and shoot at matches, and hunt I'd look at Savage real hard. Just shot a Sav. with the custom action, and factory trigger in 6mmBR, and was blown away.

Re: New Model 700's

I have seen a few of the new actions(bare) that had practically no primary extraction due to the bolt handle timing or lack of it. Just something to be aware of.
