A friend is wanting one in these rifles in 25-06 for deer. The rifle must have a wood stock. Of these three what will be the overall best rifle? Also how much will the 25-06 be affected by a 24 vs a 22 inch barrel?

I would look at the Tikka or the Winchester. I own a Winchester and like it a lot but I have read very good things about the Tikka T3. If he does not plan to modify it in any way then I would probably go with the Tikka. If he would possibly be changing the stock and trigger in the future then I would probably go with the Winchester.

I would still go with the Tikka, plenty of options out there for them.

'nother vote for T3.

Re: Ruger M77 Hawkeye vs Tikka T3 vs Winchester 70

The ruger is pretty much meh. The action design is good but man is it rough, the trigger also leaves a lot to be desired.

The Tikka's shoot great but I'm not sure I would want a plastic trigger guard mag assembly on a hunting rifle. I also don't like DBM's much on hunting rifles.

The model 70 would probably be my choice between the three. It is probably the most expensive of all of them but it will be worth it. They have a great action, good trigger, and most have BDL style bottom metals. I would look for a featherweight or better yet featherweight SS if it's going to be his main hunting rifle. Blueing rusts too easy IMO.

A vote for the M70 here. Hard to beat the smooth flawless functioning of the CRF action, without spending one hell of a lot more money.

M70 they are more expensive but with it. For a wood stocked classic rifle you can't beat it

Re: Ruger M77 Hawkeye vs Tikka T3 vs Winchester 70

Thanks for the replies. I don't think the Winchester is an option anymore because of the cost. He really wants the Ruger but I am pulling for the Tikka. I have no experience with the Ruger centerfire rifles. I know Ruger makes some good guns but I don't know if the M77 hawkeye is comparable with the overall package of the Tikka t3.

I would look into the Tikka, they are accurate and light. Great if you have a lot of hiking to do. Also I would give a call to the Sports Authority in Huntsville, see if they have any in stock. The Sports Authorities out in CO had them on clearance the last few months, they were $100 to $200 less than other places.

Re: Ruger M77 Hawkeye vs Tikka T3 vs Winchester 70

I'd buy the tikka over the ruger. Is he open to used guns? You can get a M70 CRF action for as cheap as a new Tikka. Featherweights in 30-06, 270, and 25-06 are easy to come by used.

Friends don't let friends buy ruger rifles.

Of the three listed, Tikka.

Savage Model 111 BTH

My thoughts exactly. A Ruger will not hold a candle when it comes to accuracy or smooth cycling. Tikka all the way.
