guys looking for some insight on the two bases above for a Savage model 10 308. Cabelas has the blackhawk base but not the EGW. They both look like they are machined out of 6061 Aluminum. Anyone have experience with the blackhawk?

Re: EGW vs Blackhawk 20 MOA base

I just ordered a blackhawk base, i have used egw on several rifles but thought i would try something new.

Re: EGW vs Blackhawk 20 MOA base

I THINK the blackhawk is a re-branded Weaver

Re: EGW vs Blackhawk 20 MOA base

the blackhawk base says made in the USA....is the weaver? Its made of same material as the EGW also.

Re: EGW vs Blackhawk 20 MOA base

That's definitely a re-branded Weaver base. Same font and everything. Good bases, though.

Re: EGW vs Blackhawk 20 MOA base

wow your not kidding...it is deffinatley weaver. Going to save my money and buy the weaver.

Re: EGW vs Blackhawk 20 MOA base

I think Im going to get an EGW HD for the savage now.

Re: EGW vs Blackhawk 20 MOA base

One thing to keep in mind, the EGW base does not have a recoil lug, while the Weaver base does, so if the Blackhawk is a rebranded Weaver (which I agree they look exactly the same)then it too should have a recoil lug. Also, some people have shy'd away from Weaver worried that it is not a true picatinny base; however, Weaver claims this base is a picatinny spec base, so you shouldn't have a problem there even though it is Weaver brand.

Re: EGW vs Blackhawk 20 MOA base

what is a recoiol lug? What does it do?

Re: EGW vs Blackhawk 20 MOA base

I spoke to EGW and asked about the recoil lug. They said due to the design of how the screws self center due to the contrisity(sp) of machining of surface a recoil lug is not neccasary on there designs. Seems like a good company Im going to order the EGW.

Re: EGW vs Blackhawk 20 MOA base

Yes, same thing EGW told me and if you're shooting 308 or less you'll probably be just fine.

The recoil lug is designed to sit just inside the front edge of the ejection port, it is designed to take the force of heavy recoil instead of all the force going to the four tiny base screws. Obviously for years those four tiny base screws have done fine for most hunters even with heavy recoiling magnums so I'm not going to make a huge argument that this is what you need.

LoneWolfUSMC has put together a nice little video on youtube that describes this feature and how to install a picatinny base, it is worth checking out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoW5bHQqgis

Skip to 2:00 to hear specifically about the recoil lug.
