I was looking to buy a rcbs chargemaster and seen the hornady lock n load auto powder dispenser on sale for 179.00 I was just wondering if the hornady auto powder dump is a POS or good? I got a feeling I should just get the rcbs... Thanks

After I cut off a bit of plastic drinking straw and stuck it into the dispensing tube mine works extremely well compared to my old RCBS 1010 beam scale. At that price buy it and try it!

HTH!

SFU - I have owned and used the Chargemaster for one year now. It is an outstanding piece of equipment. I have not experienced one issue, and when I have had questions, RCBS is a great company to communicate with.

Re: Anyone use Hornady auto powder dispenser?

I've been running the hornady unit for nearly 2 years now and around 6K rounds with multiple powders with no issues.

I let it warm up for about 10 min before i start using it and calibrate it everytime i start a loading session. Like everything else it works best with spherical powder or short cut grain powders.
If you run it on the normal or slow speeds it is very consistent. On high speed it seems to throw heavy every 15 rounds or so with long grain powders but it alarms when it does and you just tap a couple kernels out of the pan and reweigh until satisfied or dump it back in the hopper and let it throw another.
All in all, I love it! I greatly increased my loads per hr. by using this while seating pills. By the time i have one seated and give it a cursory inspection there is another charge ready to go.

Re: Anyone use Hornady auto powder dispenser?

I just seen Cabela's had it for sale for 179.00 and I have a 20 dollar of coupon they sent me.. So I could get it for 159.00 and free shipping.. I want the RCBS but I have spent a lot of money lately and just don't know about spending another 300 on a scale.. I just figured for 159.00 I might give it a try but I don't want to be mad at myself for not getting the better unit.. If they are not junk I might give it a try..

This is a good point... I have had good help from RCBS before.. They sent me parts that were missing from a 505 scale no questions asked (and I bought it off of ebay)

Re: Anyone use Hornady auto powder dispenser?

I bought the hornady and couldnt get it to throw mabe 3 right in a row. Sent it back to hornady they sent me a new one. I sold it on ebay and bought an rcbs. The rcbs is a let higher quality and works fantastic. Rsbs has a 50 dollar rebate so its 250 bux

Re: Anyone use Hornady auto powder dispenser?

I have the charge master for the past few years. It's great,on top of that, I lost the power cord and the little black part that the tray sits on when I moved and when I contacted RCBS to get a price and order replacements, they sent new ones out free of charge! That's customer service!

Re: Anyone use Hornady auto powder dispenser?

I bought a Chragemaster the year it came out and it worked great but the unit died this summer. I replaced it with the Hornady and while it works OK it does seem throw a lot of over charges, I also see it register a .1 over charge, then it goes back to the desired charge weight. I was too cheap to buy another RCBS and now I regret it. Just my $.02

Re: Anyone use Hornady auto powder dispenser?

There are very few complaints on the charge master. There are plenty on the hornady. The main complaint on the hornady is it overthrows charges.
I have a hornady and it did it alot. But there are instructions for both the hornady and the rcbs that let you get into the internal configurations that let you customize and change up the transition from high speed to trickle that make both units work really fast and accurate.
I found the ones for the hornady and it works great now!

Re: Anyone use Hornady auto powder dispenser?

I've got the hornady setup and my neighbor has the older chargemaster that dispenses out the side. We weighed charges on both that were dispensed by the hornady and they read the same with both being calibrated when they were turned on. The hornady does over throw occasionally on the normal setting. I would have bought the RCBS but they were out of stock at the time and had hornday on the shelf.
