So, I have run into a ton of Miltary Lake City Brass for my .308. However after doing a full length resize on them they still close too tight in my Savage. I assume its because Savage turns down the head space to a minimum(.001 I hear). What are my options-Is there another way to bump the shoulders back or could I have a competent smith create some space for me? Or am I pissing in the wind with this brass?

Hey thanks for your answers, I've been suffering this problem for a long time(years). I had no idea they made dies for undersized chambers! Thanks alot.

Yeah my mistake, All of the unfired brass I have bought was fine at first, but after firing about four cycles after neck sizing and then doing a full length resize I noticed they are still tight has hell. I have always thought they were stopping because of the shoulders. The shoulder do get slight marks on them, but I will give one of these small base dies a try!

Few things,

Have you measured the case length? Trimmed?
Anneal then press it, I really like working with annealed brass,

That said I have heard of a couple of rifles that had your issue. It went away with higher quality brass. Seems odd to me that brass does that...

Get a Lee Collet Neck size die and a Forster or Redding small base body die. Size the neck first then use the body die to both size down the oversized base and bump the shoulder. Works for me.

Re: Miltary Brass vs. Savage 10 HS Precision

if the small base still does not chamber well the last resort is to grind/ file a few thousands off the bottom of the die so the neck bumps more

Update to this thread-First yes I have tried turning my current die until I thought it was going to put to much pressure on the shell holder and die and that didn't work. I bought a RCBS small base die and that did not work either. Also as far as brass goes it does it with Lapua, Remington, Federal, Winchester, and Lake City. My brother and I have the same make and model of rifle and his does the same thing mine does, just not as tight. The only other though I have is to grind a little off the die or the shell holder to see if it bumps the shoulder a little more. Any other ideas, because I'm running out!?
