Ok this is a rant. I just put a rented disc from Blockbuster in and then spent the next 7 minutes watching commercials and previews. I tried to fast forward and all my machine would say is, "Operation not permitted now". What the F#^K!!!

Does this piss anyone else off as much as it does me?

Re: Rental Discs with restrictions on fast forward...

It's not the rental disk, it's your DVD player. All of those DVDs have restrictions on fast forwarding which won't let you skip parts of it, and the MPAA has convinced(bribery/lawsuits) DVD player manufacturers to follow the restrictions on the disk. A lot of computer drives will actually do the same.

Your two options are to get a DVD player which ignores the draconian restrictions on what you can do with your stuff, or use a computer and a movie player like VLC which ignores them.

They do it because according to them you don't "own" anything you are merely "renting" the bits from them. It's stupid and part of our broken copyright/patent system but it's there and you have to go out of your way to get around it.

Yeah, basically the application used to author the DVD has a property that can be set that disables user control during certain clips.

My VCR always fast forwards

I always have to set up the sound and subtitles, anyway, so when the previews start, I just select "Menu", set up the sound, and subtitles, and hit "Play movie"
and is skips all the crappy previews.

Nothing worked on my Bose, except the volume button. There was no option but to wait. Every new product commercial (actual TV commercials) and preview grated me more and more and more.

I ended up walking out of the room and coming back later to the video on the menu screen. Just think what it will be like next year!

Hit "stop" twice and it'll stop the DVD completely, then hit "play" and it should kick you straight to the main menu.

I will try this! I hope it works.

It works for me about 90% of the time. I learned the trick on LifeHacker's website.
