Looking to order a 260 Rem in the next few days but I'm needing some help on making my mind up with the barrel twist.

So far I'm looking at a 24" barrel with an 8:1 twist with the rifle being based on the Hospitaller. Looking to shoot on the higher range of the 260 options with the 139 scenar or try the 140 hybrid Berger although I have yet to read much on the berger.

Is there any benefit to going with a 8.5 twist and if so does it just help out the lighter bullet ranges? I believe I read somewhere that people were seeing about a 50 fps increase with each additional inch on the barrel as well.

So, help a not so educated gun guy on picking this barrel if you all don't mind.

I went with the 8.5 for my 260 build. I talked to Greg at bugholes on the subject. He runs mostly the 8.5 twist. I dont know which twist is the best.

Re: 260 Remington Twist Rate

When I was considering a 6.5 build I researched this topic heavily. I read somewhere that Remingtons slow 9 twist would work with 140 a-max, that Boots Obermeyer thought that all things 6.5 should be 8.75 for all bullets and even that 8 twist may be responsible for yaw at extreme distance (at or near transonic flight) from being over stabilized.

I ended up going 8.4 with a barrel from bugholes (here on the hide) and have now shot every popular heavy weight in the 139-142 range and it has worked well with all of them in 10-100 degrees and +640’ ASL to 4000’ ASL and an air density range of -1000’ to +7000. This while running velocities in the 2700-2850fps, 100 to 1000 yards.

Hope this helps you.

Re: 260 Remington Twist Rate

From a purely theoretical perspective running various environmental conditions through that stability equation in every app I have, an 8.5 should work for just about anything you'll encounter in North America. The only conditions that don't work out I would be evacuating to another continent anyway.

edt: I have no practical experience with 6.5s so take that for what it's worth. Not much. I am having one built now though and it will have a 8.5 twist. That also what was recommended by those who should know when I decided to go that route. Moon at Crescent Customs for one.

LOL, glad I am not the only one that does that.
