I have a M70 in 3006 that I like to do something with. At first I was just going to have it rebarrled (3006) However I would like to consolidate my rifle calibers and was thinking rechamber it to a 308 as that is what I shoot and load most. Do any of you see any problem with that? Any concerns about feeding issues?

Thanks
Greg

Should work OK might have to put a block in the mag for the shorter 308. You can seat long bullets out better in the long action.

Loaded some 308 dummy in the magazine and looks like a lot of room for feeding problems

Re: Re chamber m70 3006 to LA 308

IMO...

That's a stupid move. Everything the 308 does the 30-06 does better. With the 30-06 you have much more options, and brass and ammo is easy to find and inexpensive.

If I were you I would stick to 30-06 and never look back.

Re: Re chamber m70 3006 to LA 308

Not too sure about the stupid part but no doubt the 3006 will out perform the 308. I wanted to see if this was practical to streamline my rifle/ ammo and reloading.

Re: Re chamber m70 3006 to LA 308

i would stick with the 30-06 as well. its still a 30 cal bullet so if you shoot 175s out of your 308 you can shoot the 175s out of the 30-06 as well at higher velocity (if you wanted to that is). or you can bump it up to 190s.

some bullet seaters are not round specific . i think the RCBS competition seater can seat 30-06 and 308 from what i remember. i know the redding 308 comp seater only does 308 though and I'm not 100% sure about the forster ultra seater.

if you buy the lock in load bushings from hornady you can swap out dies and seater pretty fast without having to screw them in.

Re: Re chamber m70 3006 to LA 308

Thanks, If I have it rebarrled in 3006 I think I would build around the 190s or 208s. Just really want to streamline what I have to 308, 7-08 and 223

Re: Re chamber m70 3006 to LA 308

I'd just look for a good used 308 and keep the 06. You can find a decent rifle new/used here or on gunbroker.

Re: Re chamber m70 3006 to LA 308

Agreed with most a 30-06 is just a 200 fps faster shooting .308 if you wanna do something with it I personally build a 300 wm and get another 200 fps(ish) and shoot the .208 s but it will need the bolt face opened. But a 6.5/06 would be a pretty cool round. With just a barrel swap.

Re: Re chamber m70 3006 to LA 308

I had a 308 win and ended up selling barrel. I kept the 30-06, you can slow it down to 308 win velocity, and if you wanted like mentioned above you can shoot the heavies. If want something different than 30 cal maybe a 280 Rem or something 7mm /6.5cal..

Re: Re chamber m70 3006 to LA 308

all in all it all comes down to what you do with the rifle. do you shoot long range, plinking around, or do you use it for hunting. if its all the above then slim lining the collection makes allot of sense to me. if its going to be a dedicated to one particular aspect of shooting then it might make a lot of sense to keep it as a 30-06 so you can shoot a bit heavier bullets.

Re: Re chamber m70 3006 to LA 308

There is nothing that cannot be fixed with 700 dollars and a 30-06. Rebarrel if you like but keep it an 06, Im out now but at one tine Federal made a 175 or 185 gr match load that was killer in a pre 64 mod 70 target, the 168 is killer and still available. is your gun pre 64, pre64 type action or push feed ?
