Re: AICS compatible 50-round drum mag

If this is for real please share exactly how you did it.

Re: AICS compatible 50-round drum mag

Yes. It's for real.
I've taken XS drum mag for AR-10 (in .308) and shaved off a bit from the sides

There were:
1. minor problem with internal spring (which pushes movable lip) but it was solved.
2. Issue with rem700 reciever getting in the way - it also was solved by removing bits of material in the points of contact

Re: AICS compatible 50-round drum mag

I think this pic is self-explanatory:

XS drum mag has single-stack feed by design so obviously it was just a question of fitting it inside AICS triggerguard. Luck also helped a bit

Re: AICS compatible 50-round drum mag

Now for the more important question...WHY??? (Aside from "because I could.")

Re: AICS compatible 50-round drum mag

The OP had mentioned that it was for IPSC competition where he competes in a manual division where some stages require more than 20 rounds.

Re: AICS compatible 50-round drum mag

I shoot IPSC in Manual open division.
This magazine was made just for the stages with more than 20 shots.

Oh yeah...I remember that thread now. I suppose if a competition necessitates it, then so be it. Looks like some pretty handy machining work.

Out of curiosity, will the magazine still fit/function in its original AR-10 host?

Re: AICS compatible 50-round drum mag

I didn't figure, but it was worth asking.

Thanks and be sure to report back once you've had a chance to run this setup in a comp.

I was laughing my ass off from this post!

What does that 50rd mag weigh in at, all loaded up?

Re: AICS compatible 50-round drum mag

Does it look like?

Well it was fun project. I'd prefer pmag with 20 rounds in it... but unfortunately it's almost impossible to install double stacker .308 inside rem700 without machining an action.

Mag itself weigh s 1.5lbs empty... add 50 rounds and you're there.

Re: AICS compatible 50-round drum mag

deflinetly not going prone easily with that

It doubles as a bipod

That is damn cool though. Well done!

1. Yes I live in Moscow, Russia (heart of Evil Empire)
2. Yes we have IPSC here. (You can check ipsc.org for calendar and will find Moscow Open level III which was held not long ago http://ipsc.org/matches/calendar.php)
3. Yes, we allowed to have stuff like that (with some kind of restrictions - I can use this magazine only at competitions)

Re: AICS compatible 50-round drum mag

It seems rather appropriate for the Russians to manufacture a 100-round bolt-gun: Where was this at the battle for Stalingrad?!

Yes, for defending the Motherland against the Nazi aggressor swine.

Re: AICS compatible 50-round drum mag

You should take it to the Shot Show and sell it!

Re: AICS compatible 50-round drum mag

I hope XS will design AICS tower for their mags - so it could be bought and would be supported by manufacturer

Re: AICS compatible 50-round drum mag

Would love to see a POI shift from first round to last over a 10 min 50 rd shot string.

It's been a long time since this was originally posted... does anyone know if there is a commercially available AICS-compatible drum mag with 20rounds or more?

PMAG D-50 fits in a RPR. I've considered getting one just for the giggles at a match. The local match MD has been incorporating a "no round count" stage recently that I'd love to use it in. If my recollection is correct, the stage is cleanable in 6 shots.

Nope. Biggest thing I have seen is ~14-16 rounds with a baseplate extension.
If your rifle will accept a SR25 mag, a magpul 25 round M118LR mag with a Taran Tactical 5 round extension will get you to 30, though you'll need to do a bit of sanding on the internals to get it to feed all 30...

That's not an AICS mag, though.

This one of those, why in the hell has this not happened yet things.
