Bullet proof backpacks

I saw this earlier and really I can't find a problem with it. I mean, if you can't afford to homeschool or likewise protect your children, this option while far from perfect, is still better than nothing. I dunno if it was in that story or not but the one I read about these backpacks had a good point about a child running from a shooter with their backs exposed so why not protect their backs. If it gives my child even a .001% better chance of surviving, then price isn't a consideration.

The site I read said they had insert-able and built in versions and it looks like most of them are right around $200 so that's not bad.

Re: Bullet proof backpacks

not a bad idea. would have to keep the training subtle and inconspicuous to others for your kid to counter what the other guy stated about stealing the backpacks. just say if anything bad ever happens hide behind your backpack!

Ya we can always use the kids who can't afford one of those back packs to take a hit for those who can afford them... That's why I gave it two thumbs down. If their not all protected then we're not doing something right.

Re: Bullet proof backpacks

I wish I had a bullet proof backpack. I have a 3 day pack with a strange ak round size hole in the back of it.

Re: Bullet proof backpacks

Kids don't wear backpacks all day... They're kept in their cubby or whatever your school calls them.

I wholeheartedly agree with what the president of the Houston Police Officers Union said in the article!

This reeks of "Gimmick", and pimping 20 dead children.

Re: Bullet proof backpacks

So tell your kid to grab their backpack if they hear gunshots.... I do wonder how beneficial Kevlar would be for a small child. With kids being killed by baseballs hitting them in the chest, I can't imagine they would fair well when a bullet hit the Kevlar.

True, but I guess it would still be better than taking the round directly.

A far better solution is to stop the attack before your kid takes rounds. Return fire is the best way to do that. Until teachers/responsible staff are armed, everything else is just wishful thinking. Armed resistance has worked 100% of the time for every mass murderer. Waiting for the police to provide it increases body count exponentially.

This one's going to be up to us to make happen. Cops and government have zero interest.

Re: Bullet proof backpacks

Now you guys are just using logic and reason.... We can't have any of that in the schools!

Re: Bullet proof backpacks

I saw the news story yesterday and they pointed out that the company marketing these backpacks has been selling them for a couple of years. They have not raised prices or changed their marketing or website in light of the CT shooting.

I don't think ballistic plate backpacks are the answer but until such time as we have armed protection for school kids this does offer at least a chance for an increased survival rate for your child.

Re: Bullet proof backpacks

Schools should just have badass bulletproof doors that lock automatically, that can only be opened from the inside... And bulletproof windows

Re: Bullet proof backpacks

What happens when someone goes in with guns and sets the place on fire after a teacher has been incapacitated? You have kids locked in a room in a burning building....

Re: Bullet proof backpacks

While it may be highly debatable if this is something kids should have or could use effectively if they found themselves in a active shooter situation, I can say that there are plenty of other people out there that have been using this same concept for some time. Several agencies in the Gov't and military units have and use a ballistic backpack for specific missions. Chances are you've probably been on an airplane and one of the passengers had one of these types of backpacks with him and you didn't notice it. The one I have can be used alone as a backpack or it can be attached to a chest rig that has soft/hard armor in the front to complete a full coverage plate carrier.

The biggest thing I can see why this wouldn't be a solution for kids is that with the soft armor in it, it's good for typical Level IIIA threats, throw in the plate and empty, the bag becomes noticeably heavy. Not too bad for an adult but I can't see grade schoolers hauling this around with their books with them and not complaining. You also have to know how to employ it to your best advantage and have it handy. I can't see a bunch of scared kids all employing this correctly when put in a threatening situation.

Re: Bullet proof backpacks

Yeah....like one poster says, it won't stop a M855 round.

Sorry to be a Debby-Downer, but these back-packs will be Swiss cheese to a .223 round.

....this whole thing sucks!

Not if they can't reach the lock.
