TRG22 owners- Please help me decide

I'm planning to order my TRG22 today, but am still trying to decide on barrel length. I've read all the threads I can find about the advantages of 20" barrels for handling and 26" for max velocity at longer ranges. The ranges I have access to are 500 and 600 yds, but there is one an hour away that is 1000. Not aware of anything longer. I plan to add a muzzle brake, but suppressors are not an option in my state.

For those of you that made the purchase, how did you make your final decision and what pushed you in that direction?

Thanks,
Mike

Re: TRG22 owners- Please help me decide

Do you really see yourself needing the shorter barrel for easier handling? If not go longer.

If you go long and decide you want it shorter you can always get it cut down. You can't go the other way.

This. plus you can have it cut down to any length you want!

Re: TRG22 owners- Please help me decide

I load my 308 TRG 22 with fairly moderate loads so I did not want to loose any more velocity going with a 20" barrel. Also most of my shooting is off a bench so a 26" barrel is not a handicap for me.

Re: TRG22 owners- Please help me decide

2930 in mine from a 26" tube with 155 scenars and runs inside a lot of 260s. Aint bad if your into that kind of stuff.

Re: TRG22 owners- Please help me decide

I was watching the used market, so I ended up with what I was able to find: 26". I would have preferred the lighter, more convenient 20" for using with a suppressor. If that wasn't an option and I was shooting mostly prone or from a bench at the range I don't see 26" being a problem though.

Re: TRG22 owners- Please help me decide

I've scored 1080 yard hit with my 20" TRG in comp. Windage sucked a little bit that far cause I used 155 Palma. Steel less than 800 yards away was easy to hit with that gun/load.

The compactness was great for storage, packing, transport, etc.

Shot it with the TRG brake initially til I realized all my buddies were crying uncle from it. I swapped rifles with my buddy for a few shots and could not spot cause the side recoil blast caused me too wince badly.

Re: TRG22 owners- Please help me decide

Do you plan on traveling a lot with your rifle... travel as in flying? I was looking at cases today and realized most all of my long rifles wouldn't fit in a case that wasn't considered oversized by delta. The oversize bag fee is more than my whole plane ticket... $175 each way. So, if you fly w your gun a lot, that can add up quick. Just something else to consider. I still like the 26" tube though.

Re: TRG22 owners- Please help me decide

I have the 26, buddy has the 20. I have dibs on his 20 when he decides to submit to the eventual rifle ADD and dump it. It stays with the 26 out to 1000, and is much easier to run.

The TRG brake is kinda tough on the guys next to you, but a pleasure to shoot. Re thread the thing and put a can on it for maximum pleasure.

I get 2900 shooting the 155's and it hangs with my .260 quite nicely.

I say go with the 26", you can always chop it down later. Also the TRG's are pretty light compared to most other tactical guns I have handled.

Re: TRG22 owners- Please help me decide

I'm getting 2690 with 180 gr Accubond Black Hills out of my 26". I gain another 35 fps and a 2", straight up, repeatable over 600 rounds, POI change with my can.

The 26" barrel is kinda awkward for field use and hanging a can on the end makes it shitty for freehand shooting. I hunt with my rifle and have taken 2 B&C bucks with it.

Re: TRG22 owners- Please help me decide

@Backspace: You can always remove the rear part of the TRG stock for traveling, very easy and quick.

Re: TRG22 owners- Please help me decide

I have a 26" that is my favorite rifle I have ever owned. If I had to do it over again I would absoutely get a 20". When I rebarrel to a 260 it will be short, prob a 22". No matter what you do get the TRG you will love it!

Re: TRG22 owners- Please help me decide

Why you need the 20'' barrel?? If its not needed then go for the 26'' version and pump out 155gr scenars at 2950fps all day long.

Re: TRG22 owners- Please help me decide

I didn't want to buy a new rifle case, so I went with the 20"

Re: TRG22 owners- Please help me decide

I have a 20" 308 TRG and a 26" 260 TRG. If you are shooting 600 yards and less most of the time the 20" will be fine. I shot this weekend at 100, 450, 550, 620, 710, and 885 yards with my 20" TRG pushing Hornady 178 BTHPs at 2545. It did really well 710 yards or less. It is very comfortable in improvised shooting positions. The 885 yard target was 1.7 moa and had a number of close misses but around a 60% hit rate. The winds were favorable that day.

The 20" is certainly more handy and less cumbersome if you plan to hunt with it. I killed my first deer this year with the 20" 308, very easy to shoot accurately and quickly. I plan on hunting elk fall 2013 in CO with it. I have a 200gr SGK load that runs 2550 out of the 20" TRG and very accurate. At 600 yards and 6000 ft density altitude only 22 inches of wind drift with 10 mph crosswind, and still with 1480 ft/lbs of energy! Not bad for a 20" 308!

If you plan on placing a priority on performance at the 800-1000 yard range get the longer 308, or better yet a 26" 260!

Show off!

Nice!

Re: TRG22 owners- Please help me decide

I have a 20" and love everything about it. I do shoot it supressed most of the time so the shorter barrel works out better for me.
You can't go wrong either way!
Enjoy and Merry Christmas!

Re: TRG22 owners- Please help me decide

I've owned a 20" and 26" TRG/308, and a 26" TRG/260. I sold the 26" 308. The 20" 308 is sooooo much easier to handle, and doesn't give up much in performance. If I could only own 1 of them, it would be the 20" 308. Yeah, the 26" 260 is great for squeezing the most performance out of the system, but inside 600 yards( which is what you will mainly shoot), its just not that big of difference.

Of course, YMMV.

Re: TRG22 owners- Please help me decide

I owned a 26" TRG-22. I never got used to the ergonomics, and sold it. Your resale will probably be better on the 26" model if you decide to get rid of it later.
