Just heard on the news, that the Marine Corps. Is going to ban alcohol. They will be subjected to a couple of alcohol tests a year.

Re: Marine Corp. going to ban alcohol

Do you have a link to this story? Google came up empty for me.

Re: Marine Corp. going to ban alcohol

that will cause more problems then it will fix.....

Re: Marine Corp. going to ban alcohol

This country is getting out of control. Leadership would rather have a bunch of pansies that don't risk their precious careers than men a little rough around the edges who will get the job done.

Can't have a beer, but its ok to #$%# the guy you are sharing a foxhole with.

I dont recognize the country of my birth anymore.

"The Marine Corps‘ new on-duty standard for drinking alcohol is so strict that less than one drink at lunch would trigger a “positive” and get a warrior in hot water."

Re: Marine Corp. going to ban alcohol

It's not a ban, it's testing for fucntional alcoholics. Ban is what they may want but that ain't happening.

Re: Marine Corp. going to ban alcohol

I'll take this business seriously when they close down the Officers' Clubs...

Re: Marine Corp. going to ban alcohol

The old days of the two beer lunch were taken away from us halfway through my tour. A few slices of pizza, two beers, then back to the flightline...smart! Of course sometimes we would just have the beers on an empty stomach, shotgun style if we knew we didn't have anything to do but sit on our collective asses.
Marines drink, no question about it. It's the ones who sneak it on duty that put the turd in the pool

Re: Marine Corp. going to ban alcohol

Come on, guys! It's time to stop Marines from senselessly falling from 3rd story barracks ledges. It is time to stop females from taking the walk of shame down the hallway in the morning. It is time to stop drunk Marines from having to sweet-talk the MP's at the gate, leading to NJP!!!

A ban of alcohol can reduce the current trend of alcohol incidents by Marines across the U.S.! Do we really NEED 40oz containers of alcohol that can exacerbate alcohol incidents? I've proposed a 6oz alcohol bottle policy on base...

Marines are full of honor and never break rules, so I know I won't see any 40oz bottles since they will be illegal.

This needs to stop. And it stops with bans like this!!!

Thank you for your time.

Re: Marine Corp. going to ban alcohol

I remember guys guzzling their beers on the way down the stairs to run their PFT. They would cross the finish line in like sub 19 minutes and then puke.

I'm not shitting you, when my Grandfather was in the Air Force he broke his arm after falling out a window drunk! I think he actually got paid something like $14/year for the rest of his life. He gladly accepted the pay cause they never covered the costs of the frostbite he got while guarding buses in New Jersey in the dead of winter in January!

Re: Marine Corp. going to ban alcohol

My company Gunny made us a dry barracks a couple different times while I was in.

KIA in Iraq and they renamed the SNCO club the Ball Center after him. If your in Lejeune go dump a beer out in the foyer, under his picture for him.

Re: Marine Corp. going to ban alcohol

What the hell is the problem?
The military has NEVER had a problem dealing with a drunk soldier best as I can remember. If ya screwed up they would make it painful and you would not forget or do it again. If you did you would be VERY UNHAPPY for a long time. What the hell happened to making people answer for their OWN actions and leaving the rest alone?

Re: Marine Corp. going to ban alcohol

All of the forces have a serious alcohol problem. The culture of hard drinking, hard fighting men, has been warped over time to merely being drunks. It is sad. It is a cultural deterioration.
I also spend the winter in different Navy, AF and Army bases RV parks. There is a real drinking problem that really pays off negatively in the reitired years.

Re: Marine Corp. going to ban alcohol

Whatever, I'm getting fucked up tonight.

Everyone's company gunny or Co or first sergeant banned drinking at one time or another.

Re: Marine Corp. going to ban alcohol

I remember having beer machines in the barracks and big base parties for Octoberfest. The trends over the last 20 or so years have been to reduce the glorification of drinking, at least in the Navy. Not pro or against, but reading the article it seems that the Marine Corps and other branches are attempting to curtail excessive drinking, drinking on duty, and possibly DUI's.

As a junior enlisted I used to party: Wetting downs, base clubs, liquid lunch at Pure Platinum when at Pendleton. Chief would say, "if you can stand through muster, your golf-tango-golf". It is how we rolled back then.

Fast forward 20 years, serving as OOD, having to deal with competency for duty, picking up sailors from jail, domestic abuse and the sort. I can see what the Corps intentions are, but I am still torn between the military constantly implementing regulations and policies as a knee jerk reaction to impress the public.

In my opinion, the military does not need knee jerk policies, but to better empower the senior enlisted leadership. Back in the day the Chief or the Gunny laid down the law. Now the process of discipline is so legalistic.

The Navy has not ignored the problem of alcohol abuse, much money went into rehab facilities, awareness training and education. Just the legal side of the alcohol testing is gonna put a hurting on many members.
