Now I'm not a Marine, never was, perfectly happy to just be a lowly Army Paratrooper.

There are two facts regarding this case that's not really apparent.

1: Its my understanding that Marines stick together. They quickly come to each other's aid.

2: In Mexico, Money talks.

Now, why couldn't some Marine, former or present, start collecting money? If every Marine, or former Marine would pledge $1, you'll more then have enough money to buy your fellow Marines freedom.

Even though I'm not a Marine, I'll gladly contribute, I'm sure I'm not the only Army dude that would.

kraig... I'm not trying to be a dick, but do you really think if you send them money they're going to just release him?

Re: Marine in Mexican Jail????

I read about this a while ago, but not in any media source. Yes, it completely blows, and it sucks that a fellow Marine is being handled this way, but they don't want our money for this. They want the satisfaction and bureaucratic mess this causes. It's been discussed elsewhere in detail how to get him out. In the end, there is not much politically you can do over sovereign rule.

He was informed what to do by our customs, followed their instructions, and was thrown in jail. They OBVIOUSLY don't care about the rules...

the old story goes that they will keep you locked until they bleed you and anyone that knows you out of money. It also goes that guys have been thrown in for much less than an actual gun...like ammo will screw you...like one round, and had to pony up plenty of dollars to get out.
I feel bad for this kid me but can't imagine the circumstance where anyone that its remotely familiar with the mexican border would advise that crossing with a weapon was ok. I'm dang close and used to run across every now and then, but wouldn't even consider a day trip now. Fucked up country imo. Stay the fuck away.

Re: Marine in Mexican Jail????

Call me crazy, but I think a delta squad team or seal 6 team to go get him. This is obviously not a legal jailing, so that makes this a terrorist hostage situation in my opinion. Just go get him.

Re: Marine in Mexican Jail????

Traditionally Mexican police received almost no pay, they were expected to collect bribes, etc, to earn a living. Therefore corruption has been rampant for many, many years. Recently their pay has been increased, to reduce this problem.

Typically they hold such individuals for 6+ months, hoping to extract the largest ransom they can. Somewhat like the Somali pirates, ask a lot of money at first, and then settle for less months later. To the corrupt police there, he is noting but dollar signs. The shotgun with a 24" barrel is only an excuse.

If our government was a little more resourceful in this matter, like have some balls, I suspect he could be out quickly.

Re: Marine in Mexican Jail????

His parents were on the news yesterday. Their take was that the State Dept. is completely throwing him/them under the bus. Nothing is being done. As Savage said, he is a pawn in this. The Mexican Govt. is reveling in the mess it is causing. As the parents stated, 'they HATE us down there.'

Hopefully with time this will play itself out quietly. As great as a rescue would be... never happen. He'll get released and some cartel member will go free or, more likely, we'll give them another huge aid package... which will make them hate us more.

Stay strong, Marine!

State Dept. Just a bunch of political double talk and no action, we have all seen it before.

Re: Marine in Mexican Jail????

I think the message the Mexican Govt sent us, is they no longer want the tourism dollars we pour into their economy. Fine with Me. I had no plans to give them any of mine anyways.
