im about to rebarrel my M70.... i do not want a barrel burner so im not doin ultra mag... this is going to be my long distance paper puncher/ occasional hunt rifle.... i am going to try the berger bullets because that all you hear about as of late..

the 7MM is flat and less powder but for the occasinal hunt can you really beat the 300 WIN? you thoughts?

With long range taget practice being your main concern, and either round being capable of killing most North American game any any reasonable distance. My first choice would be the .300 Mag. The bullet selection is much better. Look at Berger for instance, in their target line there are 3 choices for 7mm and 17 for .30 cal. Second off the 300 has the edge on barrel life.

The 7 will have better ballistics and be perfectly effective out to reasonable distances for hunting. The 300 will hit harder, but out to 600-700 yards i doubt any deer will be able to tell the difference. For what it's worth I went with the 300.

Tough to choose between 'em, I have and like both.

If you don't mind the additional recoil, you could run up to 220MKs with the 300WinMag, even 240's if you go with a 1-9 twist barrel.

I have been studying this pretty heavy the last couple weeks as I have a stock but no long action to put in it. Using hodgdon data for 7mm 180 hybird’s and 215 and 230 bergers the 300 just squeaks past the 7mm in the wind. Energy on target goes to the 300 while drop favors the 7mm (less, but not by much). I figure with my AICS stock the 7mm’s recoil will be tolerable but I would definitely want a break on the 300. 7mm is likely going to be my choice...

Partly depends on what you want to hunt and how far you are going to shoot at them from. If it's just deer, it's totally up to you...either are more than sufficient. Elk, they are much tougher and live in tougher country and I would (and do) take the 300WM, especially if you are considering longer range shots.

FWIW, I consider myself to have moderate recoil tolerance and I have no problem with an unbraked Sendero in 300WM. But I don't shoot long strings in a single sitting either.

First, the ultra mag or regular mag is not going to have a significant difference on barrel life. Same thing between either the 7 or the 300. The 7 bullets will have better BC across the board. Either one will be more than adequate for any game animal save the biggest bears, and even then you should be fine. Component cost and availability should really be the only contributing factor.

Having the same questions myself. I thought I had decided on the 300, but if Berger comes out with the new bullet for the 7mm I am back to square one.

they make alot of good stuff... im basically going to be building this rife around their 210...im nervous tho because i tried their vld in 30 cal out of my .308 and it worked ok.. but then again i didnt really play with the loads or COAL all that much... but if everyone is talking about them this much there must be something to them

Are you really going to try 30 different 30 cal bullets? Ballistically the 7 is best in everything except top end energy, which you will have plenty of in either. I don't really see any reason to choose the 300 unless you like recoil. If you really want to match the 7mag ballistically, you don't really have many choices in the 30 anyway, as you will be shooting the heavies. Either one is great, but I'd only choose the 300 if I really had to have the extra energy.

I'm assuming your bolt face on your M70 is a magnum? Sorry, but that was'nt mentioned in the first post, that being said, I've also had both and would much rather have the 7. Mine was boringly accurate with all it was given and to this day probly the most accurate rifle I've ever owned (besides my little 6.5 Creed).
To do it over though with a big 7 I'd do a .280 Ackley, same performance, less powder, no belt.

300s also put bigger holes in things. Having watched large tough animals take several rounds from a 300 that matters to me. I've had a couple 7mm people want to convert after seeing a 300 in action.

But if it is deer, this does not matter. In fact I would choose neither of these cartridges if deer were the primary target, unless intended range topped 600 yards. Sure they work, and I use the 300 because I have it, but it's way more gun than necessary for deer and they can be taken cleanly with much less over-punishment on both ends.

More round options with the 300 but I like the 7mm and its capabilities.

As I said. A 180+ gn bullet coming out of a 7mm is going to put just about everything down. Unless you're going after big grizzlies or Kodiaks, you're not going to have a problem with anything. The question goes beyond what's capable or best, but what do you want to shoot.

the rifle right now is a winchester m70 chambered in 7MM....100% facotry rifle with a 24+inch barrel on it..

what the rifle will be
barrel length will be between 26-28 and threaded for a break from baretlein in a 1-10 twist in a m24 contour (prob fluted)
stock-XLR (tactical evolution)
trigger- timney
one piece 20 moa base
optics leupold mark 4 ER-T 8.5-25x50

i have a remington 700 in 308 that does well inside of 400-500 meters for deer but i want something that will truely reach out well beyond 500M for deer and be ready on the occasional elk hunt.. i love the numbers that the Remington UltraMags put out but i feel that 90+ grains of powder will just burn out the barrel fast.... so no RUM.... if i did go with 7MM it would just be the remington mag...but right now im thinking the 300 WIN still takes the cake due to bullet choice and the fact that it can carry heavier bullets for more down range energy.....

as for recoil this rifle will be 10+lbs if not 15... im 6 foot 3 and 230+ lbs...the rifle either way will have a break on it so whats recoil?

Keep in mind that you only have 3.350" or so to work with in mag box. 7mm offers great BC but bullets are long, with a max of 3.350" in mag box the bullet will be pretty deep in case.

I really like the 70 platform but in a WM or RM chambering the short mag box sucks for running the longer, higher BC bullets.

For punching paper 7mm, for long distance hunting 300wm. I use 208gr amax 75gr H1000 powder and it is a hammer at 1000yds. I could go up to 77gr if i wanted to, but like you i'm trying to save the barrel as much possible.
