I have been pondering the thoughts of suppressing my Rem .308 5R, I also have a Stag 5.56 AR platform. It would be awesome if I could get one that would work on both rifles. Is this possible and what would work?

Yes, a lot of guys use 1 can for multiple platforms. A 7.62 can works pretty well for 5.56, though not as well as a dedicated 5.56 can. First thing you should decide is your price range. This will narrow a lot of the field. 2nd would be if you want a thread on mount or quick disconnect.

price range, In my eyes its unlimited, in my wifes, your allowed to spend exactly nothing. LOL. not sure on the price range. I'd like to stay relatively low price but good quality, Quick disconnect seems like a nice feature but I guess its not 100% required. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: solvovir</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Yes, a lot of guys use 1 can for multiple platforms. Re: Thinking of suppressing, any work for .308/5.56?

I agree with the earlier post that a 308 can wont run as well on a 223 as a dedicated can would. More food for thought is that the TBAC 30ba runs more efficiently on a 260 than it does for the 308 it was designed for which certainly isnt lacking to begin with. Sound suppression and accuracy are extremely good with the 260 but probably wouldn't be as good with the 223.

Personally Id spend the money getting one high quality can rather than two sub par cans; (which I know you didnt ask but it was probably rolling around). You could buy a second quality can later but you cant undo having two subpar cans.

Re: Thinking of suppressing, any work for .308/5.56?

A .30 cal can on a .223 should be very close to the same loudness as a .223 can, but it will probably sound a little different. The extra volume helps with suppression. I would recommend getting a dedicated .223 can if you want to shoot a lot of .223 though

Re: Thinking of suppressing, any work for .308/5.56?

Yankee Hill 7.62 work really well on the 5.56 also but try to get the Ti on if you can afford it.

Re: Thinking of suppressing, any work for .308/5.56?

I went with a TBAC 30P-1 for all of my needs. If you do get a thread on, just make sure the threads match all of your rifles. The 30P-1 is 5/8-24 so I have a ARP .223W barrel coming with 5/8-24 threads. After that, all of my .308s, 6.8s and .223 rigs will be the same threads.

The other option is to go with one of their QD models such as the 30BA, once you get the mounts for all of your rigs, you can swap the can over quick to each one.

Re: Thinking of suppressing, any work for .308/5.56?

Just ordered an AAC can for use on several .308 and hopefully on my AR. I just bought a 300 BLK upper to go on my AR...might want to think about that. Haven't tried it yet but excited for that stamp to come.

Thats what I bought 6 mos ago (YHM .30 ti phantom)
should be any day now!

Re: Thinking of suppressing, any work for .308/5.56?

Unless size ,and weight are a big thing to you I would get a 30 cal.I run a 30 cal more on 223s than 308s . If you had a huge camper ,and you had a lawn mower trailer would you buy a 3/4 ton truck to pull the camper and a 1/2 ton to pull the lawnmower trailer or just a 3/4 ton and pull both ? Thats how I look at it .

Re: Thinking of suppressing, any work for .308/5.56?

Take a look at the AAC 762-SDN6. It's a well built, quality can for switching around from 7.62 to 5.56.

Re: Thinking of suppressing, any work for .308/5.56?

you need to be careful of using a Ti can on a ar15 platform they have a lower threshold of how much heat they will take before failing

Re: Thinking of suppressing, any work for .308/5.56?

Although no longer available, I use an AAC 762SD on my .308 and my AR and it works very well.
It is not as quiet as my OPS Inc 12th model, but it is hearing safe. And I have shot with several others with no objections.
As far as accuracy the AAC is every bit as accurate as the OPS Inc.

I would take a look at a 30 caliber suppressor rated for magnums if you plan on shooting 300 win mag or equivalent in the future. That way you can use it for your 308win too...or 260rem etc.

But personally, I would get a seperate 556 suppressor because of size and semiauto rated, short barrel rated considerations.

Re: Thinking of suppressing, any work for .308/5.56?

I applied a similar concept from my .338 to my .308 with an Elite Iron 338SD. I have a brake adapter on each rifle to swap my .338 can to the .308(although it's a bit longer and heavier than I'd prefer on the .308). The suppression on the .308 is very impressive. Also, the timing applied on the brake adapters to can connection was dead on repeatable from Elite Iron (good job over there). I just had to turn down my rifles so that the brake was aligned properly on each barrel. That's something to consider when you have a can that needs to be clocked to the brake, which in turn needs to be clocked top dead center to your barrel.

Regardless, I ended up getting a TBAC 30P-1 as a dedicated can on my .308 bolt gun.

When/if I do anything for my 5.56, I'm just buying a dedicated can. Any recommendations from anyone would be welcomed there. I was thinking going back to Elite Iron or Thunderbeast because of the great experience I already had with them both. Thumbs up guys..

Yes, Titanium embrittlement is not your friend.

Re: Thinking of suppressing, any work for .308/5.56?

I bought the YHM 7.62 Ti QD for all my AR's. NO problems whatsoever. I use it on 1 AR 308 and like 5 different 5.56 ARs. As long as you don't do mag dumps like a mall ninja there will be no problems. Also POI change is minimal with mine, no more than 1" at 100 yds on any of my guns. POI change is repeatable on each gun.
