Is it possible to build and register an AR upper as a SBR? Before the MG ban I know you could register the sear conversions.

Having a registered upper would allow you to sell the upper at a later date and keep the lower.

Re: SBR?

It surely is possible, but I am failing to see the advantage you are seeing to doing it this way. The beauty of an AR15 SBR is registering the lower to allow you to throw any number of short barreled uppers on top of it.

Re: SBR?

Probably won't do either at the present time. Was looking at the specs on a 300BO and thinking about building a upper in that caliber.

Then I thought about how about doing it in SBR. Which got me wondering about the registration.

They allowed registering sears because the sear itself is considered the registered machinegun.

You can not register an upper because it is not considered a firearm by the ATF, it is classified as a barrel assembly not a firearms receiver.

Re: SBR?

Have a look at the BATF SBR/SBS frequently asked questions. You will find that you cannot register any one part of these as a short barreled anything. You need to have a barrel and a receiver to do it. If you aren't a manufacturer you have to have the receiver in your hands to fill out the paperwork because the serial number is required by law to be on the receiver and you need it to file the forms. As a manufacturer you must have both in order to register.
