I just completed my first build 338 RUM. Remington 700 action, Bell and Carlson medalist stock and Kreiger barrel. I am new to long range shooting I don't have alot in my budget for a scope. Can you give me some suggestions for some glass? I have heard good things about swfa fixed ss and vortex PST.

Re: Need advice on budget scope for 338 RUM

I bought a Super Sniper scope. Functions well but the glass ain't so great. Supposed to be tough enough to take the recoil though. I have not had a PST but I have looked through them. The glass is much better but I don't know anything regarding durability on a heavy recoiling rifle.

what is your budget? $400? $800? $1200? lots to consider at each price range.

How heavy is the rifle? If it is a little on the husky side you might not have to worry about recoil and making sure you get a rock solid optic, but most in those price ranges should be able to handle some kick.

Re: Need advice on budget scope for 338 RUM

Probably around 500 bucks right now. It about 14.5 lbs. Recoil is not that bad.

Re: Need advice on budget scope for 338 RUM

I do have a Vortex crossfire 6-24 on my AR that I was thinking of robbing but from what I have heard it might not with stand the recoil.

If you can't afford glass, you've picked the wrong rifle. You're going to be spending a ton learning with the big .338 RUM. I'd recommend selling it for a .308 or .223 and getting descent glass and using the remaining money on ammo.

Re: Need advice on budget scope for 338 RUM

So what you are saying for 500 bucks will not cut it for 338? So what do you recommend for a budget scope if there is such a thing?

I already have both of those rifles in the safe and reload so ammo is not an issue. Don't plan on selling the rum.

Re: Need advice on budget scope for 338 RUM

I have been happy with the Midway Viper HS, and have seen the SS 10x live a long fruitful life on big boomers. The Weaver Tactical stuff isnt too far fro,m your price range, and they are plenty stout. Hell, I just sold an IOR 2.5-10 the other day for about what you are asking....there are definitely deals out there in your price range.

Re: Need advice on budget scope for 338 RUM

Well you clearly are not just gonna get rid of a rifle you just built, and if money is a factor and you are thinking $500 ish, i would look hard at the various vortex offerings, Some Nikons in the 400-500 range, and Sightron offers some fix power scopes in the 500 range but tend to have smaller objective, but they should be guaranteed to hold up on the 338.

Don't worry about crazy high magnification in that price range as your sight picture will be fairly poor at the high magnification with the scopes in that price range anyway.

JMO, but a decent scope, use it on the 338 for a while and if you get some funds later down the road, more that scope to something else and get nicer optic for 338.

good luck

Not to sure on the thinking behind building a rifle that costs 3 bucks a trigger pull then skimping on the glass.

Personally, I would save up another 300 and buy a bushnell 3-12 tactical.

If you want to go really cheap, get the bushnell tactical 10X.
They have been used on 50 bmg rifles. About 220 bucks.

Save your money for what you want. Be patient. That cartridge will not be easy on scopes , your shoulder either.

Re: Need advice on budget scope for 338 RUM

I made my suggestion not only because of how hard the rifle may be on it, but because at the cost of shooting the rifle, you're not going to be gaining skills like you can with a .308 or other SA caliber. Furthermore, the range which a .338 is needed, the cheaper scopes won't cut it, optically. Realistically, inside of 1,000 yards, the .338 is NOT a good thing. It certainly isn't the right tool for a first precision rifle.

Ok I will hold off and save some more money.
