Anybody else using H4198 with their .223 loads?

I gave H4198 a try in my .223, and have been pleasantly surprised at how good it shoots. Right now it is shooting consistent .250 groups with a best of .160 out of a Rem 700 in a McMillan HTG, 26inch factory barrel. I have had good luck with Varget, and feel like I am getting close with RL15 on some loads too, but this H4198 just shoots so good.

NSO123,

4198's a good powder in the 223, especially for the lighter bullet weights. I don't think you'll see the velocities you want with anything heavier than about 50 grains, though. I'd save this for the lighter bullets only. By the same token, neither Varget nor RL-15 will give you the best velocities until you get into the heavy bullets, such as the 75's to 80's. There, these two are hands down the best ones going, and are used by the lion's share of competitive shooters.

I think the biggest drawback to the 4198 (my opinion, anyway) is that it's such a pain in the butt to run through a measure. There's several others that give similar results, but without the powder measure problems.

if you like light bullets and high vel, try Accurate 2460 and 40gr vmax 2.24oal, case trimmed to 1.757

29 gr = 3765fps (100 yd zero just under a 2" drop at 200). matches hornady factory load through the chrony, on paper, and in the mic measurements. you should be able to easily cover up 5 round groups at 200 yds with your thumb. (using a savage 112 26" heavy barrel)

28.5 = 3720 fps
28 = 3688 fps
27.5 = 3611fps

i've ran it with heavier bullets 55fmj 19gr = 2660fps, but that was my more tame load for turkey in a break open action.

i've used 4198 with 55gr fmj 20.5 = 3045fps but actually liked the plain jane imr4064 better with the heavier heads.
