Suppressors Surefire 762SS Question

I have a Surefire 762SS and I was noticing something at the range yesterday. I am wondering if there is anything to this or if it was just happenstance.

When I first put the can on the rifle I began to shoot groups. The POI was a little low left and the groups were larger than typical of the rifle. As I began to shoot more groups, the groups tightened up, kept the same POI.

My question is with this suppressor and QD mount is it typical for the groups to tighten up as the carbon builds up? And if so should I refrain from removing the can except for unsuppressed shooting such as load development and routine cleaning? As it stands now I take the can off and wipe down and put some oil on the brake after every session, should I stop that too? Thanks for any input you may have.

Re: Surefire 762SS Question

When did you clean your rifle last and how often are you doing it? I notice that it sometimes takes 40-50 rounds for the groups to tighten up after cleaning. If you're cleaning every range session then stop. Only clean the barrel when there's a loss of accuracy. I wouldn't oil the brake after every use because IMO it's probably just adding more material to any fouling in the can and not really beneficial.

Re: Surefire 762SS Question

What you describe is common. If you don't want POI shift from cold bore leave it attached all the time. Clean barrel and suppressor with guide rod all the way through both if needed.

Re: Surefire 762SS Question

Ok, do you guys that have posted actually own Surefire suppressors?

Do not oil your muzzle brake, that would be the first thing, also make sure your bore, crown, chamber, and bolt face also do not have any oil on them. You want a completly dry gun from the bolt face to the suppressor, and do not clean the suppressor except with the provided tool (brush) from Surefire.

Make sure that you do not have any carbon built up on the contact points on your muzzle brake, you can either scrub it off or use Lemi Shine to get the carbon off.

Follow the directions for installing the suppressor

There is a Surefire rep here on the hide, think his name is Chucky? You can contact him or surefire if you need additional info, chuck knows his stuff.

Chucky and Kudu22 are both reps here for SF... and I did say not to oil the brake. I'm not sure if you're directing the first comment at me, but since you asked...

Re: Surefire 762SS Question

Just asking a general question. No offense, just clarifying. I got my SS recently and love it already, had a brake issue but that has been corrected.

Broker, it takes 40 or 50 rounds for your rifle to group? That doesn't sound right? Or are you just saying that it takes 40 or 50 rounds for it to really start shooting at its best?

I don't advise not cleaning your rifle, I still clean, I just don't scrub the shit out of it every time. Mainly use patches and then scrub every 300rds or so.

Re: Surefire 762SS Question

I meant it takes 40-50 for the groups to tighten back up and be at it's best. Sorry about that. I can see how that sounded now. I clean everything but the barrel like the BCG, brake, etc, until I start to see a drop in accuracy which is usually the same around 300-400 rounds or so and then I scrub the barrel.

Just a heads up make sure you pull that brake off every 800-1k rounds or so. I noticed on mine the carbon begins to build up on the crown pretty bad and creates a false crown that doesn't seem to clean out unless I take off the brake and clean it real good.
