Looking for a supplier for JUST the plastic bumper off an AR buffer. Heavy buffers are easy enough to make up really quick, but I hate buying a cheap buffer just to rob the plastic piece.

Thanks

I've gone this route a few times. Give Numrich a try...they used to sell just the buffer bumpers for around $4 a piece which is a LOAD cheaper than even the cheapest complete buffer:

Good luck!

Dont suppose you also found a good source for tungsten slugs did you? A solid stainless buffer is good, but the heavier the better when suppressed.

They have standard buffer weights and spacers too!

As for Tungsten weights...not sure about that. You might consider high density tungsten powder (HDTP) as a better alternative (commonly called "swingweight" like for adding to golf clubs, bats, etc.) or something like a pinewood derby car shop online (usually have weights for cars if you can find them in the proper size for the application). Personally, I'd go the powder route as it will cut down on reciprocating weight, noise, etc.

I did find the powder online, seems like you end up with roughly the same density as lead though, which would be cheaper and easier to do.

I have an un-named tungsten buffer in my possession with 3 tungsten slugs inside, they measure 0.535 diameter by 0.606 length and weigh 1.4oz. I found on one pinewood derby site they have 3/8x7/16 slugs but only weigh in at .5oz, need that extra diameter to take advantage of the weight.

Thanks for your help, I think I found the bumper on Numrichs, no picture though so cant say for 100%, its $4.20 though.

No problem! Glad you found it. I'm pretty sure that is it. The ones I ordered a while back didn't have a pic either, but that's about the price I paid per bumper. They were just the standard, synthetic bumper pads...nothing to write home about.

Good luck with your buffer project!

Did some math here...

I think lead may be a better route unless you were machining your own tungsten. I believe he is constrained by pre made slug sizes.

I could make a stainless buffer, bore a 2.6" long by 0.600" diameter hole in it giving me an additional 0.200 in3 of volume inside the buffer. Based on 6.55 oz/in3 for lead and once you subtract out the room for the bumper Id end up with a 4oz slug inside there compared to 4.2oz for tungsten.

I may be able to play with the bore dimensions to get some more volume, but I like this better than paying for tungsten, just melt some lead right in there. Plus Ive got plenty of that crap laying around from when I used to cast 45 bullets.

Eta.. If I open the bore to .650, still leaving .050" wall thickness, and the length to 2.7, I can get a 5oz slug in there (assuming pure lead). I figure a stainless body even with small wall dimensions has to be as strong or stronger than the aluminum ones they come with. How strong does a buffer body really need to be?

Re: Where to buy just the bumper for an AR buffer

Update, didnt get it quite as heavy as Id calculated, must be due to not being pure lead Im guessing. Still not bad for a few cents worth of Stainless bar and delrin rod, and free lead. The tungsten one I purchased weighs 8.35 for comparison.
