I just got done with my 6mmBR build for prairie doggin. I wanted to source all the parts and put it together myself, so I went with the Savage platform.

- Savage Target Action
- Single Shot...I know, I know but I single load my mag rifles anyway
- Left Port, Right Bolt
- Trigger set to 16 oz.

- CBI 28" (Savage Bull Barrel Contour)
- McMillan A5 Stock
- Nightforce 8-32 MOAR ZS

I took it out yesterday to get the scope on paper and start the break in process. Only put 10 rounds through it, but got one 3 shot group you could cover with a dime at 100 yards. I think this is going to be a real shooter once I get it broken in and bedded.

Total cost of rifle build (not including NF) $1556...Cant beat that, IMHO

Picture kinda sucks, but here you go

Nice looking rifle. Start buying all the Varget you can find. Mine shoots 28.5 MOA to 1k with Sierra 107's. No recoil....you are gonna loveit!

Nice, have the same barrel on a right port, right bolt action in a savage f-class stock. I tried 105amax and hpbt, 105 vld, and 107 smk, but best accuracy came with a Berger108 target hpbt. Tried a bunch of varget and could not get the accuracy i expected. Switched to h4350, cant remember the charge, and it started shooting bugholes and the sd/es shrank to 4.xx/18.x. Also got a 70ish fps bump over varget loads. Seems it is around 2900 fps. The barrel broke in good and cleans up good also. Have a criterion remage from jim briggs and it is a hammer in 243 fast twist.

will 6mmbr feed from a mag? I'm looking for a new PD gun also but I have to run a mag

OP, very nice!

Hey Tom,

Got me a 20x47L in the works for PD's next season. 55's(.381BC) at 3900 fps out of the AI mag. Run the numbers, you'll be amazed! 1.8 mils elev at 600Y and .2 less wind than my current 6x47L load.

Re: 6mm BR - New Prairie Dog Killin Gun

Very nice and watch out critters. You will be puttin them in 1 ragged hole when you get a good load worked up.

The Eliseo R5 tube gun chassis will work. With standard AICS it's dicey because the round is so short. However, it can be done. Apparently on Savage 6mmbr will feed from recent centerfeed magazines according noted Savage gunsmith Fred Moreo.

Re: 6mm BR - New Prairie Dog Killin Gun

Nice set up! A 6mmBR rifle like that is on my short list. Gotta love the Savage as you can build it yourself. Did you have McMillan perform the inletting on the stock (ordered it as a drop in)?

Yep it can feed very well from a mag. I've had mine going for a couple of years now using the AI 223 mags. A little sanding to let the round slide up inside the mag and cut the feed lips about 5/16" shorter is all it take, maybe half an hours work with a die grinder and file.

6BR is an awesome little round. I don't quite understand why it does what it does with so little powder but it works.

Re: 6mm BR - New Prairie Dog Killin Gun

Thanks for all the complements. I am super excited about this rig being finished. I now have three rifles setup with this exact stock:

- Sako 17 HMR for the suicidal PD's
- 223 AI for the guys from 200-400
- 6mmbr for 400+

Even though that is the plan I am afraid my 223 AI will not get used as much now that I have this.

McMillan did the inlet, so it was a drop in. Be prepared to wait...took 4.5 months to get the stock. Considering I had everything else back in July it was pure agony.

I am hoping to shoot Hornady 105 BTHP because they are $10 cheaper per hundred than the Bergers, but we will see how they shoot. I will start at 30 grains of varget (because I already have a bunch of it sitting around) and work it from there, but I will keep the H4350 in mind.

Re: 6mm BR - New Prairie Dog Killin Gun

Nice gun! Can't beat the 6mmbr in a single load. Always wanted to build one or in 6mm BRX for a little extra speed. Make sure to throw up some prairie dog pics shot at distance

Re: 6mm BR - New Prairie Dog Killin Gun

Catronro, i had a brainfart, was thinking of my creedmoor when i said h4350. I meant h4895, it is just a notch faster burn rate then varget and lends itself to a smaller case capacity rd like the br. I had no luck with varget in any of my 6 br rifles. I tried it in my 13.5 twist shortline comp rifle and it sucked, ended up using re10x and 66 gr barts. To be honest the best use i found for varget is 308, everything else seemed to prefer h4895: 243light bullets,223, and 6 br

Re: 6mm BR - New Prairie Dog Killin Gun

I tried 6 br in ai mags about 5 yrs ago. I made delrin spacer in front, tried it behind the follower also. Made a new follower shaped different, tweaked the feedlips. It never quite worked right, had to really run the bolt hard and then when it jumped wrong i would jam bullets in the case. Sure wish the 223 ai mags were around then, they look to be what i was trying to accomplish back then.

Re: 6mm BR - New Prairie Dog Killin Gun

One of the nicer Savages I have ever seen. The prairie dogs are in defintely danger. I've got my Criterion in 6mm Dasher on the way. The Pdogs will fly!!!

Re: 6mm BR - New Prairie Dog Killin Gun

How do you like the Nightforce 8-32 MOAR ZS for PDs? I was looking at the same scope but NP-R1 due to the thinner lines which I think would help for targets and PDs at long distance.

I like the MOAR for PD, it is a LITTLE thick, but I like the numbers to help me keep track.

I just got my rifle back from Phoenix customs. They put a muzzle break on it and bedded the action...turned out great, Keith is the best, will definitely be going back for future work.

You can go to Mike Bryants website at Bryant Custom Rifles and see a article on how to get the 6BR to feed from a regular magazine.
Varget H4895 and RE15 are all good powders for the 6BR.CCI 450 Magnums are the most common primer but some use the CCI BR4's and some use the Wolfe Small Rifle Magnums.
If your barrel has a 8 twist and the freebore is the popular 0.104 try 30.2-30.8 grains of Varget the CCI 450 magnum primer and Lapua brass.
Once you find the right seating depth they will shoot lights out.
I don't know what kind of reloader you are but if you have a 6mm comparator for measuring your seating depth measure your loaded rounds into groups by 0.001 and your accuracy will be outstanding.A comparator mounted onto a caliper is the only way to go.
If you look at the picture I am varying the seating depth by 0.001 increments.
