What brand of primers do you use/prefer? Its time for me to make another purchase of primers and I'm wondering what the consensus of the "Best" primer out there is.

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

Depends on the load: I've had best luck with Fed, but ES/SD not bad with Win when loading 7mmRM.

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

I voted CCI, but for 18 years, I've used CCI, Remington, Winchester and Federal.

I've got about 24k here and if you had to divide them up by brand, you'd wind up with pretty much equal numbers.

I've never had a dud primer, so they've all gone bang in my many weapons.

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

CCI have been the all around best for me, good luck finding them though.

Just went to my local sportsman's warehouse and it is picked clean

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

For precision rifle, I HAD always used CCI BRx, but recently bought a "few" Tula LRs. I didn't change my charge, and was rewarded with an identical zero, and identical trajectory, as well as no discernible difference in group size at 200 yards...which is to say a bughole if I really, really try.

For pistol, all I've really ever used is Wolf. I've had duds. Probably one in a thousand. When I take them home and pull them down, there's powder, the cup is smashed into the anvil pretty well, but there is no sign of ignition. I pay VERY little attention to "prep" with pistols, and I churn them out fast, so maybe it's me, not the primers...

I would only use Winchester in a pinch. Been seeing WAY too many people's boltfaces getting torched by failed Winnie primers failing.

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

CCI mil primers since 90% of my loading is for AR's. They are magnum-strength primers according to CCI website, so I just re-work any loads that were originally developed with regular primers. In reality, I have really seen no real difference in my loads.

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

CCI for anything where I want to have a bit higher quality, but overall I've had good luck in most rounds (pistol and rifle) with Tula and Wolf over the years as well. for bulk ammo it's hard to beat and even on better quality ammo still works great.. but like others, my dad used a lot of CCI so that's always been my go-to if the prices are reasonable.

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

I'm really surprised so many people use Tula/Wolf. I've heard good things about them, but I've never given them a chance. I've only used winchesters, Remington's, CCI and federal thus far..

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

I voted CCI.I've used nearly everything, but I have less problem with fit with CCI. I've never noticed much, if any difference in group size, but sometimes a change in poi.A pic of my bench would show several brands, but CCI would be the majority. Lightman

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

You didn't say what its for.

I use Wolf for 6x47 Lapua.

I use Federal 210M in .308, 215M for 7WSM, 7 Dakota, 338LM Improved.

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

There is no "best." One will work the "best" in certain applications, but not others.

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

I have obtained good performace from CCI, Rem and Federal. I used the Gold Medal Federal 210M for most short action loads.

I would bet there is less consistancy in any given shooter then there would be found in differant primers. I just have not seen any noticable differance comparing apples to apples.

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

I did not vote but I am done buying winchester primers. Brand new 200pcs winchester 243win brass and 2 out of 5 seated way to easily for my liking had the same problem with 50pcs of remington .35 whelen brass. torched my 243 boltface twice.
cci large pistol primers do seem to work good in my 45.acp.

I think i will try cci or wolf rifle primers next.

P.S. I do not load hot loads, fwiw

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

Well, I just placed an order for some federal gold medal match large rifle primers. Once I use these up I think I will be buying some Tula primers to give them a go.

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

Rem 7-1/2 & CCI Military for AR-15
Federal for large and small pistol
CCI BR-2 for .308 loads.
CCI Military for M1 Garand

I recently tried some CCI 200 large rifle primers and I noticed a lot of inconsistency in force needed to seat the primers compared to BR-2. Has anybody experienced this? Perhaps just a bad lot? I'm thinking of switching to Federal for standard rifle primers because of this.

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

Generally I like Winchester as they seem to work well with a broader ranger of powders. Also they worked just as well as 210M for me but are cheaper so it's all I pretty much use anymore.

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

I used to use CCI LRM primers for all my rifle rounds and it worked well, but I have since moved to Winchester and could not be happier, Winchester primers have been a bit more consistent and it gave a small boost to velocity, which I wasn't expecting.

Ditto on every point. For years I bought BR-2's and during the last primer shortage my local Dealer decided he was going to accelerate contributions to his retirement plan. When he started selling them for $70 per box/1,000 I got a couple thousand Wolf primers. Not a granule change in loads and POI/Group size remained exactly the same. At the time the Wolf primers were selling for just over $15/thousand. I am now just shooting up my remaining supply of all other primers and will be exclusively using Tula which has replaced Wolf in the US market (or at least at my supplier).

I am amazed at the performance I get with them over the chrono as well as on target. Would love to hear a believable explanation from CCI what REALLY makes their primers so expensive.

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

Only primers that have worked well for me are Remington, Winchester, Federal and CCI. Never felt the need to try Wolf but I used Alcan back in the 60s, they were good too but they're gone now.

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

Tula Large Rifle Mags for everything except my .338LM. F215MM's for that.

Russian primers rock!

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

I started with Federals, using match grade for my 30.06 and my 338LM. I am switching to CCI because of what I have read about the CCI "casing" being tougher than some others, and not as susceptible to flattening and blow out.

I can attest to that. I am currently using Winchester primers, on my standard loads using CCI primers, the primers were nice and rounded, maybe a slight bit of flattening. With the Winchester primers I am getting flattened primers on most of my loads, no other pressure signs, which leads me to believe Winchester primers are softer than CCI. After I use up all my Winchester primers, I am going back to CCI.

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

I like CCI primers but I will take any I can find right now!!!!

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

Yeah I am a 1%er. I have some of almost all of them. Times change. I will take what I can get. If it goes bang its a good one right now and likely for a while to come.

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

Would be easier to tell you what I don't use. Seems like someone is always saying try this or try that. Would be crazy to stay with what is already working.

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

I have tried them all in some form or fashion. Personally I like CCI most over the broad spectrum. They seem to have good military primers, and in my last 20K (2.5 years) I have had 2 misfires, and 1 hangfire with them. I can't say the same about Wolf small rifle, where I am running about 1.84% misfire in 223/5.56. Winchester also makes good primers, and are actually a little better than standard CCI (non military) in small rifle and large pistol. Remington had issues seating in starline brass, which tells you something, and Federal (blue box), well I only loaded 300 rounds before I decided I'd rather sell them off.

Re: Your Preferred Primers?

Love CCI's for my big bore handgun loads, but also a big Federal fan. I will say I ran into a dud primer two weeks back on one of my 308 loads. Good firing pin strike, no boom. Was a federal LR match primer properly seated in Lapua brass.
