Official (DTA) SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Kits are sold the same but the kits have the new bolts in them, if someone wants to just buy a bolt head and barrel assembly then they can but the coversion kit price includes the bolt, barrel, and magazine just like before.

Are the bolts still coming this week to fix the back log??

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

I talked to Ryan @ DTA yesterday and he mentioned they expected a big batch of new bolts on Friday.

Did the bolts make it?????

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Thinking about getting a 300 win mag barrel for my rifle. I have a range close to my work at 450 yards and I can travel to my dad's to get out to around 600. currently have the 308, and I am looking for something different to shoot. Is this round a good choice or should I go with something like a 6.5 creedmore? I don't reload yet, and I don't hunt. If not these what are some other good options? Thanks

For those ranges, I would just stick with 308win. But since you have a DTA and if you want to have fun with something different just because, I would get a 6.5 Creedmoor. All you will need is a different barrel and hornady 140amax loaded ammo is excellent. It will have less recoil but better wind drift. 300 win mag isn't worth it if you don't hunt as the recoil is more, plus you'll need to buy new magazines too.

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Anyone have any thoughts on cutting down a fluted barrel. Am sure it will void any warranty from dta. Cutting a 26 down to 22 would put it into the flutes. Not sure how it will affect the harmonics, might be a crap shoot. Any one have any history or experience.

Awesome write up. I can't wait until I have my own SRS (hopefully in a few weeks if the bank likes me )

Thanks for the reply. I am just wanting something different to shoot. You are correct though, there isn't any real need. Sometimes it's just fun to change things up a bit. I have shot my father's 300wing mag Weatherby Vanguard, which bucks like a mule. When I use to hunt, I hunted with a 7mm win mag. I liked that cartridge cause when I hit something, the deer just dropped. So I have experience with those calibers but I agree there isn't much of a need. It's something I will have to think about. I just bought a Thunderbeast 338ba suppressor, so I just figured I would buy something to hook it up to.

I appreciate your reply cause it did give me something to think about.

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

I sure hope that Kahles makes more robust scopes than they did in the late 80's. Used on special receiver 5.56 NATO AUGs, I had 2 catastrophic failures (the integral STANAG mount sheared off one and the reticle assembly rotated about 45° in the other) and each took 6 months for the round trip to and from Austria. I understand that Kahles now has a stateside repair center.

Assuming that these new scopes can withstand .375 CheyTac and .50 BMG, I am curious about the new reticles and other specs.

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

I like this partnership, and the idea of DTA-oriented scope.

But I personally don't like the reticle, especially it's ranging capabilities/limitations. Its a nice touch to add rapid human figure-based ranging lines like SVD scopes have (PSO and POSP), but I'd much rather see 0.1 or 0.2 mRad subtending. I think that Vortex did a better job surveying the operators and designing their EBR reticle.

I don't think Nick has released our reticle yet. Are you talking about the Mil6 reticle that Khales is offering?

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Yes I am. I saw only two reticles on the Kahles Web site that Nick's article referred to. One was a MilDot reticle (Viet Nam relic :-D ), and the other was a MilHash (which a usable reticle must be these days :-\ ) - but not the most convenient MilHash in my personal opinion. I'm sure there are operators who'd swear by it, just like there are those still swearing by MilDot (talk about old dogs and new tricks :) , and no insult to the old dogs intended).

I'm very happy to hear that the exact reticle design hasn't been finalized yet - and that there is a chance to see a reticle resembling more of EBR than of PSO.

OK, I texted Nick.....glad I did. I might have really pissed him off.

Stay tuned.

I admit to having no experience cutting down good barrels. And frankly I abhor the idea of cutting a DTA barrel, for many reasons. Especially considering that they offer barrels in 26", 22", 16" - IMHO enough to satisfy any need within the caliber.

Of course you can order one from SAC in any caliber and in any length. Please don't mutilate a good barrel.

I assume you meant "<span style="font-weight: bold">it</span> really pissed him off" - sorry to hear that. Especially since few things cause as many disagreements and arguments as reticles do, and you guys are steadily finding ways to improve design that already was quite good (I'm talking about your rifle).

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

No, I was talking about if I got on here and started talking about the new reticle that he mentioned in the article.

From your comment I wasn't sure if you had seen it or that Nick had released info on it that I didn't know about.

He isn't ticked about anything, I just wanted to check with him before I opened my suck.

wait until the reticule is publicly launched,

I am confident that it is better than anything else available.

I agree Ewen. I'm proud to have my name attached to the design. You are right, I think it offers points never available and fills a void in the market.

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

I know it's a little early, is there any prices for certain models already for the scope?

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

This place is costing me coin. I did the paperwork on a 30BA two weeks ago from the group buy. Last week I ordered a Covert in .260. This thread had me wanting the rifle, the group buy pushed me over the edge. I hoping I don't like the new scope. I can't afford to like much more.

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Question for you guys regarding scope height.

Since the DTA doesn't have an adjustable cheek comb and it's a flat top rifle with a rail, mounting the scope in the proper height rings is critical to getting a good cheek weld and settling in comfortably behind the scope and still get proper eye relief.

So how do you figure out what ring set or mounting option works best to get good eye relief without going through a bunch of rings and mounting options?

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Lofty,

DTA specs their scope mount at 1.5" . I'm running an AADMount at 1.46" that seems to work for me.

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

The dta rings are well made and on line with any others out there. My eye alignment was a little low, so i sanded down the skins a little and perfect. I looked for some a little taller but no luck. I would think any lower and you are having to cant you head off to the side to much. Before I sanded the skins down I had to cant my head to much making it difficult to get a consistent weld. Try the ones designed for the rifle then work your way out from there

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Stupid question, but since this is where all the DTA experts hang out....

I'm planning to get a precision rifle in 260 remington very soon, and I've been strongly considering a DTA. I expect that I will be a very active shooter with it, and will need to replace the barrel every 2 years, if not more often.

I was pricing out DTA barrels and noticed they ran $1100 and up with the barrel extension. But how much is costing you guys to replace the barrel if you reuse the extension? Is it considerably more compared to a more conventional type bolt gun ?

The cost on the barrels will be less if you have an extension. I can't give you an exact price as that depends on who's blanks you use, what smith does the work, what finish you want etc. My guess would be $600-800 to have a barrel replaced on your extension.

That sounds about right and very reasonable.

Ya figure $350 for a nice Bartlein blank and $350 for quality machine work....maybe $75-$100 for a ceracoat job.

What's up with the DTA website? I'm trying to look at the gun section and nothing appears it says empty.

Adjustable cheek comb, 10 round mags?

Re: Idea! Official DTA SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

Something I'm not real clear on with the HTI.... are the bolts like the old SRS as far as 408/375 cheytac and 416/.50BMG being separate bolts or are they like the new SRS with a removable bolt head? Its not clear on the website. A friend just got his HTI a few weeks ago and is waiting on the .375 conversion. He didn't realize there was a different bolt or bolt head for the smaller based cal. I told him what the SRS story was but I don't know enough about the HTI to give him the info.
