Anyone know what the specs for the M40A1 chamber should be. Spoke to a good gunsmith by me today regarding the metalwork for my build and he mentioned there were options regarding the actual chambering.

If you're building a rifle then get the chamber done so that you can shoot the ammunition you'll likely be shooting. It would suck if you got a tight match chamber only to find out you'd have some difficulty chambering some hunting ammo...should this be a hunting rig too.

Generally I reload all my 308s with 168gr HPBT but also use factory 155s at times. I think my best bet is to give Dave Kiff at PTG later this week and see what he recommends. I definitely do not want to be boxed in with an overly tight chamber.

The tool I use is setup as follows:
It's a STD SAAMI spec 308 across the case body with a slightly tighter neck. Throat is for 175/180 grain bullets loaded to a 2.8 COAL (has a little freebore)
I've chambered hundreds of 308's with it and they've all run well.

My favorite .308 chamber is the PTG ".308 Obermeyer Match." The last one I chambered had 168 Amaxes touching the lands at 2.825 OAL.
It was an ER Shaw blank, Remington 700 action and HS Precision stock and shot 168 GMM, 175 GMM and Amax 168 handloads into .7 moa. Some guys here would be ashamed of a .7moa group, but I was pretty proud to get that with an ER Shaw barrel and factory ammo.

Spoke to Dave at PTG and told him what I'm shooting. He is recommending the 308 Bisley Match, which is what I will be going with. Great guy to speak with and I appreciated the time he spent with me on the phone.
