Need help find a good combo for my .308

Hey guys, I am new to the forum, long range shooting, and reloading

With that being said I bought a remington 700 sps varmint in a .308, 26 inch barrel with a 1 to 12 twist in it. I have all the stuff to reload but need a little help finding a good combo of bullet and powder (please include grains of powder) for a standard barrel. I plan on in the future upgrading the barrel but for now I want to find a good round to shoot.

federal case(others will work w/ a slight powder adjustment), federal 210 primer, 43ish grs of reloader 15 (work up from about 41grs to be safe), 175gr SMk loaded @ 2.82 COAL

I am planning on mostly just shooting target, maybe a competition here and there once I am ready. I would also like to go hunting as well. So all around I guess.
I like to shoot at a place called Wes Thompson's in Piru, ca THat place rocks, paper targets out to 300 yards and steele stargets out to 1000 yards! They have comps on sunday mornings, the best thing out there is they are really cool people!
Like I said before I am a handgun guy but just falling in love with long gun!

Every rifle likes what it likes as far a ammo.

What are you planning to use this rifle for ??

What range,short,long ??

Some powders that work are 4895,4064,Varget or Reloader 15.

Hard to beat varget for someone whose just getting into reloading. Very forgiving powder meaning it's very easy to find your accuracy node, especially with the jump tolerance of a 175 smk.

When I first started out I was loading 44.5 varget, lapua brass, fgm210m @ 2.825" coal. 2.236" to ogive. This was out of a 22" bartlein. With a 26" you'll probably be close to 80 fps faster

your COAL will probably be long as well.

THanks for the replies guys! Looking forward to putting together some rounds! interesting, a couple of different kinds of powder but seem like you all like that 175 grain Sierra... cool think I need to order up some!

I hit up the range yesterday, I took my buddies remington 700 target tactical .308, 24" barrel with a 1:11.25 I believe, my rifle is still waiting for some stuff to come in before its shootable again. Anyhow I took this rifle out to the range with some loads I worked up thanks to you guys input and wow. My buddies rifle loves the SMK 175 gr. with 45 gr. of varget and a COAL of 2.800.
