just got all this together and wonder if i am right. have a suppressor coming for a LR rifle. best use would be to have sub sonic ammo, right? all the subsonic labeled stuff i see has advertised velocities of 1035-1080 fps. looked up cci standard vel (best in most of my 22s)and it lists at 1070. my question is,is the sub sonic label from most makers just a gimmick? wiki shows speed of sound to roughly be 1120fps. any input please.

Re: speed of 22lr ammo

In Florida at sea level you are looking at around 1150 fps. Mach is affected by altitude and temperature, as temperature dops and pressure drops the Mach number is lower.

Re: speed of 22lr ammo

i did learn that atmospheric and other conditions affect speed of sound. good to know what it seems to be in so.fl. i am in no. cent. from all this,i seem to think that if my gun shoots, say standard velocity, cci or any other, well it should do fine as a sub sonic round.

Re: speed of 22lr ammo

match and standard velocity ammo is technically sub sonic as there is no sonic boom or crack created (staying under the speed of sound) as it stays under that 1120 - 1150 ish range.

rem "subsonics" are lower than most of your match or standard velocity ammo, but not by much.

the truely quiet stuff is aguila SSS and similiar aguila products, rem cbees, cci quiet, cci cb longs. those guys usually stay well below 1000 fps.

with a suppressor, you'll swear you've had a misfire - all you hear if the firing pin hitting.

generally the aguila SSS may be hard to stabilize in many rifles as the bullet is 60gr and very long. of course you have to try each one to see what works the best out of your setup, but i prefer the rem cbees on game for the bullet design, and the cci quiet for paper.

Re: speed of 22lr ammo

Federal 711B is theoretically subsonic and yet at least one out of every ten go loud for me. CCI-SV has been reliably subsonic.

As others have mentioned above: you will know when one breaks the sound barrier, as will those standing around near you!

Re: speed of 22lr ammo

The CCI Subsonic HP and CCI Green Tag have the lowest standard deviation I have measured for rimfire ammo. I have found them to be remarkably consistent in velocity. Hope that helps...

Re: speed of 22lr ammo

I did some research a while back.
