So recently I sent my rifle in for service and it came back with the muzzle brake canted/ off set about 5 to 10 degrees from strait with the rifle being level. This is a Savage 110ba 338 lapua and I was wondering if this could affect accuracy in any way? Thanks

Re: Canted muzzle brake?

So the brake isn't straight with the barrel? Technically if the bore in the brake is straight with the rifle bore it should be fine but if the brake was installed that crooked I would want it fixed.

Re: Canted muzzle brake?

Do you mean not indexed straight up and down? If so, it may be purposeful to help offset the rotational forces. I do that with my Sako and really helps keep the rifle from jumping sideways when shooting on hard surfaces.

Re: Canted muzzle brake?

If it is not quite timed, get some 400 or so grit sand paper and flat surface. Figure 8's until you get it straight!

yes, not indexed strait up and down. It used to be strait before I sent it in to savage but now it is like it was tightened just past the point of being level. It's not too bad but I notice it. I'm really only concerned if this would cause accuracy issues. Here is a pic of the muzzle brake looks like. Do you think I could just back it off a tad to make it strait or would I have to get another crush ring and reinstall it? It barley needs to turn to the left.

Re: Canted muzzle brake?

Indexing has no affect on the accuracy potential of the rifle. Turn one 90 degrees off and it will only have an affect on the shooters ability to manage the rifle under recoil.

Re: Canted muzzle brake?

Thanks Dave, I really didn't want to contact Savage and have them tell me to send the rifle back to them to get it fixed. It's only noticeable if your looking for it.

Re: Canted muzzle brake?

Did they do something with the head space. Looks like they ran the barrel in just enough to change the brake. Might want to recheck your head space with gages. If the flutes are lined up get a new crusher washer. Brownells has the washers. Just my .02

Re: Canted muzzle brake?

I'd make some washers out of a coke can (the thin sides). xacto knife will do.

Re: Canted muzzle brake?

Yeah, they had to replace the bolt head so they set the barrel to the new bolt head. The thing shoots sweet now, before It was tough to lift the bolt handle after firing and the bolt face was pitting. Just shot it yesterday and it is really smooth now, bolt face nice and smooth also.
