OK, suckered you in for the moment. My wifes BOP 223 is ready to go finally, weather pending.

My vacation home has been crazy busy with the holidays and the weather being shit so I'm hoping tomorrow I'll be able to squeeze some time in at my local range. I went by today and it hasn't been plowed out yet but that's not a big deal. I just have to remember the shovel....

Tomorrow is looking like a high of 23 degrees with 20-30mph wind. Not ideal but it'll work. I will update this as soon as I can, hang tight guys.

So here is the list of ammunition that's being used for sighting-in, practice, and for testing. Any guesses which one of the 12 that will be used will come out on top???

Black Hills “Blue Box” 68gr Heavy Match Hollow Point (practice ammo)
American Eagle (Federal) 55gr FMJ BT (practice ammo)
Federal XM193F (M193 Ball) 55gr BT (practice ammo)
Federal Premium V-Shok 55gr Nosler BT P223F
Federal Premium FGMM 69gr MK BTHP GM223M
Hornady Superformance Varmint 53gr V-Max #8025
Hornady Superformance 55gr GMX #83274
Hornady Zombie Max 55gr Z-Max #83271
Hornady Varmint Express 55gr V-Max #8327
Hornady TAP 55gr TAP FPD #83278
Hornady Match 75gr BTHP #8026
Hornady Superformance Match 75gr #80264

What are the specs?

Re: Black Ops Precision range day........

I've never had the nerve to get one myself, but I do love that camo pattern

It was a pile of parts I sent off to Mike to put together for my wife. A McMillan A5, an E series R700 action, Rem tuned trigger & modified shoe, PTG single piece bolt, 16.5" 1-8" twist Brux barrel chambered with BOPs specific 223 Rem reamer, Badger M4 floorplate, Badger scope base, USO titanium rings and USO ST-10 (moa/moa, reticle Type 1 IPHY, M40 #3 turrets, ERGO, 2" shade, blue lit reticle).

Ah come on, never be afraid to finish a stock in different colors. Worse case it doesn't turn out as planned and you get it refinished. This McM A5 started out with molded in Urban Camo but with the BOP fit & finishing process the guys take care and put a lot of attention to making sure everything is perfect. So once they were done the stock went to Todd Jackson to finish it off in Urban Camo Cerakote.

Dare to be different. Hell I even had a set of AICS skins hydro-dipped to look like fancy walnut, they looked awesome by the way!

Re: Black Ops Precision range day........

Damn, duped again.

I'm gonna have to guess Hornady match 75 grain BTHP.

Nice build BTW. I like the odd color schemes. Less likely someone will steal it, too recognizable.

Re: Black Ops Precision range day........

I've got a new 223 PSS that needs to go to the range too but time & shit weather is my challenge...... This one is box stock except a Timney trigger and a PTG flootplate. Otherwise an unfired virgin.

Re: Black Ops Precision range day........

Federal 69grn or Hornady 75grn will be the ticket. My 1:8 twist .223 loves 75grn Amaxes.

Re: Black Ops Precision range day........

I'm hoping the 75gr Hornady Match or Superformance will be the trick ticket. We'll see though. I have a Lead-Sled for bench testing then it'll be into the snow for shooting off the bi-pod but I don't see that happening to well as the snow is to deep even after digging out a spot to lay-down and shoot from.

Re: Black Ops Precision range day........

My vote goes for the Hornady 75 match. I remember seeing the pics of the rifle when you first got it back, still looks as sweet as the first time.

Re: Black Ops Precision range day....updated.

Update of a cold afternoon at the range after some PB Blaster & a hammer to knock the lock open on the gate I only had time to sample 5 rounds from each box of ammo listed above. I did not use my Lead-Sled as planned (Harris bi-pod and rear-bag used) and did not shoot the Federal XM193F or American Eagle for groups.......only shot some to get me on paper.

This isn't the best assessment because of only sampling 5 of each box, minimal time and weather but it gave me a better insight into what the rifle likes and dislikes.

Winner winner chicken dinner was a dead heat toss up between the Hornady 75gr Match and Hornady 55gr TAP FDR. Runner up goes to the Hornady 55gr V-Max and the big suprise of the day goes to Black Hills Blue Box 68gr Heavy Match. I've never had any luck with the BH blue box but this rifle seemed to like it. The above mentioned offerings all easily shot between 3/8" - 1/2". Considering the condtions I was very happy with those results.

Now for the rest...... The Federal Premium 55gr V-Shok did shoot alright but just not quite as good as the V-Max but very close. Next in line was the FGMM 69gr which is another one I've not had the greatest luck with in the past and today was no exception printing a close to a 5/8" group. This leads me to the Hornady Z-Max and three Hornady Superformance offerings. Z-Max was shy of 3/4" (which suprises me as I figured it to be the same as the V-Max just a different package), the 75gr Superformance was about the same and the 53gr & 55gr Superformance leaving a pattern not worth mentioning.......

All of the measurments mentioned are "generous" using a metal ruler. No cutting it the 1/16" or even pressing hard to squeek out an 1/8" but just simple numbers to point me in a better direction. Come summertime if she's shooting 1/2 minute of woodchuck my wife will be happy!

When I'm back home on vacation again I'll take the time when the weather is better for a "more fair" evaluation. The extra time will allow be to shoot at least a whole box of each ammo selected, clean between each box, and allow for the same cool down times between each box. I just didn't have the time.

By the time I got done with the above I was waaaaay short on daylight. I shot the PSS only to put her on paper and a basic zero with the Hornady 55gr V-Max. No shots for groups, fingers & feet were numb at that point.....
