I've got a Nightforce NSX 5.5-22 x 56 and want to piggyback an Aimpoint Micro T-1 using a TNVC SAR-3P accessory rail

Seems Aimpoint makes some spacers to go between the rail and the device. Anybody know how to figure out whether I would need one and how much space? I can imagine needing some space to clear the scope housing from the field of view. I'm just not sure that my math and geometry is up to the task. I'm trying to avoid placing a second order by planning up front. My scope objective is 56mm and the tube is 30mm, but then there are other parts of the Aimpoint to figure, too.

Think a 50BMG rifle would tear this up or be fine?

I don't understand why you are putting a red dot on a .50 but if I were inclined to do so I would try and get a built in ring mount. Either a top of a ring with the rail built in like Badger or an interface that allows you to add them like Sphur.

When the bunnies charge, you gotta have something for close range...

Bunnies and a 50 = soup

Re: Piggybacking an Aimpoint Micro on a Nightforce NSX

Are you planning to mount it straight or offset? If offset, you won't want any spacers as you want the T1 as close to the tube as possible. As you can see on our pic rail ring:

The rail is really close to the tube but a T1 has plenty of clearance:

If you mount it straight up and down you probably will want at least a small spacer so your elevation turret doesn't block your view.

Re: Piggybacking an Aimpoint Micro on a Nightforce NSX

Jon A - thank you very much for posting up these photos! I plan to offset it also.

My only remaining concern would be the difference between the two radii (objective and tube), then, between our two setups. My difference would (56/2-30/2) or 13mm. Can you let me know about yours?

It looks like the objective housing is just starting to show in the view - is that correct?

Re: Piggybacking an Aimpoint Micro on a Nightforce NSX

I'm sorry, I lost track of this. On that scope the outside diameter of the 42mm objective is actually about 50mm, so the difference is 50/2-30/2=10. Keep in mind the actual outside diameter of the 56mm NF is larger than 56mm (I can't remember off the top of my head but it should be roughly 60-something mm).

Anyway that's not the objective showing in the view. That's actually not a real T1 but one of the clones--this one by Sig Sauer--and that flat spot in the view is just part of the sight. Even though the 56mm objective will protrude higher from the tube, it blocking the sight still isn't an issue.

Or maybe he wants to zero the red dot at 700 yards, use it as a target locator.

I put the red dot on the target from 300-1000 yards, drop my head down behind my scope and the target is in view at max power.

I'm sorry, but this drives me crazy. It's NXS....not NSX. I see it too often from people who even own them lol carry on.

Thanks for catching up on this post. I tried contacting Aimpoint through their web form, but they never returned my message. Maybe too detailed for them to handle. It looks at least worth ordering without the spacer to try. Thanks for the info!

I don't see why folks would criticize a little red dot as a secondary. Its not like I'm making it a primary.

Re: Piggybacking an Aimpoint Micro on a Nightforce NSX

Thanks, 427Cobra. A perfect use case illustration.

Re: Piggybacking an Aimpoint Micro on a Nightforce NSX

The placement of the red dot sight aint that easy, and I belive that the placement is something that has to be determined by the use of the gun, as well as the user preferences.

In some cases, like it you really want it to be a secondary sight, a back up for the scope, then the 12 o'clock posisiton is the preferred one.
Mostly proffesional users use it, but also becuse its the best for weak side shooting to.
Here is my T3 with 12 o'clock configuration for that is what works best for me on that gun.
The knobs aint to high so I can use it in all positions without any hassle and the gun is mainly shoot from bipods.

In some cases like on my TRG with 5-24x72 (not this gun) do I use the ofset mount as it would be to high for my neck with a 12o'clock mount

In other cases like on a carbine or a hunting rifle for fast shots I prefer th 5o'clock position as I can maintain my checkweld to almost 100% and just turn the gun.
Works fine with 223 and 308...
on upper picture the mount is combined with an Simrad mount for NV.

Sometimes are other things going to be attached to the scopemount to like an illumnator.
That is best attached 12 o'clock as it's least close to illumnate grass in front of the shooter that way.
So everything will always be a compromise, but try to find the compromse that is compromising the least of what is important for you.

Best Regards Håkan

Hakan - thank you for the great reply complete with awesome photos. Very helpful.

Cool to see a post from my family's homeland. Our original family name was Hjelm. I visited several years ago and really liked it.

Need some skorpors or nisu to go with my coffee this morning.

Re: Piggybacking an Aimpoint Micro on a Nightforce NSX

I did this on my LMT MWS, I went with 12:00 position. I ended up pulling it off. It worked but seemed goofy after it sat there forever and not used.

In my case, a lot of work for nothing. But sometimes we get stuff in our head and can't be stopped. Good luck.

First zero the Scope then zero the aimpoint after the scope, by comparing where the dot is compared to the reticle.
When that is done shoot a few testrounds.

Thanks but I was specifically asking him how he did it for the ranges he stated. He zeros the red dot at 700...what about the scope?
