I've got some fire formed federal gmm in .308 consistently measuring at 2.008 and I've got some fire formed winchester power point in .308 measuring from 2.002 through 2.008. All of the brass has been fired out of my rifle. Will this effect my loads if I reload it? Standard .308 cartridge is supposed to be at 2.015. I thought the brass was supposed to grow and be trimmed back to 2.015. My calipers are calibrated with a machinist 1,2,3 block I have. Please advise.

Thanks,

Re: What do you do with short brass?

As others have said shoot it and it will grow after the body is resized. Short bottleneck and or belted rifle brass is not really a problem like short brass it is in pistols because the brass headspaces on the shoulder and or belt respectively. If the brass is long, trim it and if the brass is short, shoot it. When the brass is shorter than SAAMI spec the next measurement you want to keep an eye on is at the Datum line on the shoulder to watch out for excessive headspace.

Re: What do you do with short brass?

I forgot to mention that the brass had not been neck sized yet. I might get a couple thousandths after that. I was reading on some verbiage from sierra that they recomend to trim to 2.005. Thoughts and opinions on a trim length of 2.005.

Re: What do you do with short brass?

Most reloading manuals recommend trimming the .308 case to 2.005". The 2.015" would be a maximum trim-to length. As you approach or exceed 2.015", you run a greater risk of your round not chambering properly. You should be OK with brass trimmed to 2.002" - 2.008".

Re: What do you do with short brass?

I just shot a bunch of LC sized around 1.995 and it shot great with some 210gr Bergers. It didnt really grow after I shot it but whatever.

Re: What do you do with short brass?

Uniform them all to 2.002" and shoot them. Trim to length is 2.005" for the .308. Having it at 2.002" won't hurt anything.
