Hi all, just wanted to put a post out there for some of you, who like me were looking for good information on the Rainier Arms Ultramatch Barrels. I recently completed an AR10 build using a Megga MATEN upper and lower, a Rainier Ultramatch 16" barrel, Rainier fore-end a RRA two stage trigger group, standard DPMS bolt, a Voltor adjustable stock and AR10 spring and buffer with and a Vortex Viper HSLR XLR rifle scope.
First off let me tell you that fit and finish is great and as so many have mentioned the MATEN platform has been awesome to work with since it give you so many choices for parts, including less expensive AR15 lower parts. But with so much written on the Megga product I will leave it alone beyond saying that I'm very happy with it.
My primary concern when building the rifle was what barrel to put in the thing. I wanted a high quality barrel at the best price. I considered many of the favorites, Krieger, Hart, Noveske, and GAP. I found some info on the Rainier Ultramatches with regards to the 223 wylde chambering and decided that the 30 money back thing would work for me if I didn't like it, plus no wait as they happened to have it on hand. Of course the next question was what length. I knew that I was going to mount a suppressor on mine and so wanted to keep the length as short as possible while still staying under 1MOA. I bounced back and fourth between the 18 and 16 and finally decided on the sixteen under the same idea that if I couldn't get to sub MOA with it then I would send it back and move up in length.
After a very brief barrel break in (a few rounds and clean, twice, then five rounds then clean and done) which I used to also get the thing on paper and get a rough zero. I decided to fire a couple of groups to see how she would do. Winds were light with gusts up to 3mph, temp low 38, and pressure steady at 29.9. Rounds were M118 speacial ball and came up with an average of 2460 fps.
As you can see from the two five shot groups, first one is the higher of the two, accuracy is sub MOA, hanging out around 3/4 of an inch at 100 yards when I'm doing my job. In the second group I dropped one, but called it low after the shot as I felt a slight flinch. I have since shot a few more groups to verify zero and impact shift without suppressor have found the 3/4 consistent with or without the suppressor, though there is nearly a 3 MOA shift from suppressed to unsuppressed. I have ruined many golf balls at the hundred yard range since with boring consistency. The rifle is a shooter and the barrel a keeper. I also want to give a shout out to the guys at Rainier who were really helpful and patient with me as I was deployed during the process of the build and held parts for me until I got back. Thanks guys!
Also a quick word about the Vortex Viper, it's pretty bad A for the price tag. Mine is a FFP 4-16 x 50 and uses an MOA to MOA reticle that resembles the H58's. It makes holdover and windage holds a snap, cuts follow ups down to nothing, plus no more crazy mil to moa conversions for this shooter. Also clarity is great and the shim system for a zero stop works good. Not bad for around 800.
In any case, hope this helps with regards to the Rainier Ultramatch barrles and also the Vortex Viper.

Re: MaTen Build with Rainier 16" ultramatch barrel

I guess the picture thing didn't work, anyone have a tip on how to load a picture if you don't have a web site (I'm social media averse). Thanks

Re: MaTen Build with Rainier 16" ultramatch barrel

Pics would be nice but since I'm doing a very similar build with RA the write up is appreciated.

Re: MaTen Build with Rainier 16" ultramatch barrel

The ultramatch barrel is the most accurate i own.

That's good to know. I went with one of those for one build and am going with one of the new Mega barrels on another. It will be interesting to compare the two since that will be the only difference between the two rifles.

Re: MaTen Build with Rainier 16" ultramatch barrel

Let me know how that mega barrel turns out. Saw they were taking orders for those and the new monolithic setup now. Very curious.

Re: MaTen Build with Rainier 16" ultramatch barrel

You can't just put any old link in - it has to be a link to a picture. If it doesn't end in .jpg, .jpeg, .gif or some such thing, it won't work.

Re: MaTen Build with Rainier 16" ultramatch barrel

Thanks for the writeup. I've been debating the 18" vs the 20", so hearing the 16" is that good makes it easy.

Now if they were ever in stock ...
