I have the chance to buy a Vortex Viper, but it only has a regular plane mildot vs one with dots and hashes. How much of a difference does the reticle with dots and hashes make over one with just dots? Also does anyone know if I get this scope if I can send it to vortex and have them put tactical mil/mil turrets on it?

Thanks

Chase

Re: Plane Mil-Dot??

Well I don't know if there is a name for the others, but one has only dots in the reticle and the other has dots with hashes between them. I don't know what else to call it besides plain, normal maybe.

Re: Plane Mil-Dot??

Don't waste your money buying either a plain mil dot and definitely don't send it back to Vortex. It's not that they cannot do either, but for the cost you can buy a brand new one configured the way you want it. I would search around and look for something exactly the way you want it.

Sounds like you need to shoot more to know what you'll want and need! What weapon do you plan to use it on? Hang around the range and talk to people. Most are more than willing to be helpful, lend advice and at times let you try their weapons. Just be polite and listen carefully and ask about anything you don't understand. No one will laugh at you. We were all in your exact place at one time. It's a complicated sport, which begins to make sense after much study and practice.

Re: Plane Mil-Dot??

Take a good precision rifle course or find a friend whos rifle competitor. Most will gladly help you out.

Re: Plane Mil-Dot??

I guess I should talk to my dad's friend. I'm sure he could help me considering he went through Army and Marine sniper school. Thanks for the help.

Right now I have a weatherby vanguard and its accurate, but not particularly very good for options on parts. So I'm selling it and I'm going to get R700 SPS Varmint in .308 and upgrade as I go.

Re: Plane Mil-Dot??

The weaver tac grand slam at midway seems good. Is the reticle a gen 1 mildot or the Gen 2? Also how much would not having the paralax adjustment matter at ranges of 50-500? Would 3x10 be enough for out to 500?

Thanks

Re: Plane Mil-Dot??

I'm guessing your budget is about 300.

The weaver 3-10x is an excellent scope for the money.

It is equipped with a "standard" or plain mil-dot, but it has good glass and is very well made.

10X is plenty for shooting 500 yards. You won't be shooting benchrest type groups, but it is certainly enough to get you started.

If your budget is limited, do not be swayed by higher magnification. If your budget is about 300, then spend it on something with decent glass and good, consistent internals.
The weaver will give you that. Since it does not have a parallax adjustment, for short range work, reduce the power

If you really want an enhanced mil-dot, then the only thing in your price range is the SWFA SS series.
They are good scopes and hold their value well.

I would recommend the 12X
