A buddy of mine is going to buy one in .223 rem, I was curious if anyone has had experience with this rifle. How well do they shoot, what kind of ammo do they like(store bought), and any other things a guy should know about them. He's askin my opinion and I'd like to help him out, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Run. Far and fast. They're the cheapest things I've seen since the POS Remington 710.

Search the web. There are a lot of positive reviews out there. Apparently very accurate. Of course they have very cheap stocks but the basics are solid. Much better than the Remington lowend stuff. Rifle Basix have a trigger for it now and EGW is producing 0 and 20 MOA bases for it. For the money it is hard to beat.

Well, I can see what it is when I hold one. I personally would never buy one but my buddy doesn't shoot much, and wants it for general plinking and something for his teenage daughters to shoot. I was wondering if anyone here has shot one or can attest to its quality/lack thereof.

    Re: Savage Axis/edge rifle?

From what I hear they are very accurate for their price, and make a great "deer rifle" or a rifle that will spend a lot of time in the closet and not get shot much, or taken care of. The only real problem that I have with them, is that they have the recoil lug integrated into the stock. This means they are not compatible with other aftermarket savage stocks. I think the better route is to spend the extra $30 on the savage stevens, in case upgrades are desired later.

    Re: Savage Axis/edge rifle?

look at buds guns and see what a 10 or 12 or some heavy barrel for $650 and there may be others for less. stevens can be rebarreled for the cost of the barrel and tool. $250 for some decent brand. up to 350 maybe? a whole stevens is ??

i didnt like the lug deal. makes it a poor choice if any future upgrades are desired. i was looking at it as a donor action. so if its good as is, if its priced right for the guy, if its clear your not gonna get a super slick stock and all that we tend to do, it might work for him.

    Re: Savage Axis/edge rifle?

I think this is Savage's move to sell rifles that can't be upgraded as easy as the Stevens rifles. Lots of folks are building great rifles and starting out with a Stevens. You won't be able to do that with the Edge/Axis. But if you know you'll never want to upgrade (I wouldn't ever make that assumption myself because stocks develop problems) then it's a good deal. I just think the Stevens is a better deal because all the Savage parts will work on it. I have a pre-AccuTrigger Savage 110 in .30-06 and it's a great rifle. It's the same rifle now sold as the Stevens essentially. Mine came with a walnut stock. I bought it used for $230. After about 6 months the stock warped. My guess is the shop I bought it from steamed the stock and made it straight long enough to sell it to me. That's ok because I bought a very good stock for not much money and I now have an excellent rifle that cost me well under $300. If I wanted I could upgrade that rifle a lot and have an exceptional rifle. Unless they come out with aftermarket parts for the Axis you just won't ever be able to do those things with those rifles.

Spend a little more and get a Stevens. You won't regret it. You can buy a Stevens 200 for $319 and that includes shipping. That's about $45 more than an equivalent Axis. The Edge rifles are another $20 cheaper and I don't know what the difference is. Still IMO I'd much rather have a rifle I could upgrade or replace broken parts easily without having to buy them from Savage (that can be expensive).

    Re: Savage Axis/edge rifle?

bought my wife one in 223 the trigger is really heavy feels like 7+ lb but over time it does lighten up after the metal to metal contact get smoothed out dry firing with snap caps would be a good route the gun is very accurate for what it is with me behind it using reloads and mixed brass win,rem lake city etc i can consistently shoot 1.5 moa some may look down on that but for a 250.00 gun with a basic scope and grab bag reloads i think it is great one thing that caught me off guard since the only rifles i own have heavy barrels is that the barrel heats up real quick however it cools off fast if proped up so if your friend wants something really basic that can double as a canoe paddle then this may be a good match for him

They just released a stainless version now too. I am thinking about adding one to the safe. Paint the stock white, bead blast the shiny stainless and have a good winter predator calling rifle.

    Re: Savage Axis/edge rifle?

I run my stevens at competitions. And as stated before the edge (axis) isn't even equiped with a standard recoil lug. It would be very hard to get the same level of accuracy. If it's only job in life is a deer gun for 500yrds and in go for it. If you every want to upgrade anything get the stevens.

    Good luck,
    Merritt

    Re: Savage Axis/edge rifle?

+1 for the stevens or savage 10/110 series. More upgrades. A lot of savage guys are building customs on stevens actions. Have the action timed and trued laterby sss or stockade, buy a stock and a trigger when you can. You can pick the stevens up for under $300 almost anywhere, and academy sports will ocasionally run them for $250 or less in certain calibers.

    Re: Savage Axis/edge rifle?

i have an edge/axis and love it did a triger job to it and worked up a good load. all i can say is im "snipin on a budget and love it". put down a white tail doe at 350 and a speed goat at 465 both one shot one kill!

    Re: Savage Axis/edge rifle?

The Axis is an excellent solution to a very common requirement. The great majority of gun owners/shooters are less demanding than the bulk of our forum membership. I believe dedicating an Axis to a utility Rifle/Hunter role is both good economy, and an efficient application of appropriate resources to moderate needs.
