i want to rebarrel my stevens 200 in 30-06 to 243 to build a cheep little target gun. feeding is not an issue im going to use a single shot follower i just want to shorten the bolt throw if possible. someone said something about changing the bolt stop . with a B&C stock it should make a good varmint/target gun with a savage varmint barrel .... any thoughts please... thanks

Re: shorten bolt throw for savage

You'll need the bolt "baffle" from a short action cartridge model 110. It's got a finger that will hit the bolt stop earlier, restricting bolt stroke length to short action length.

Re: shorten bolt throw for savage

that was it was.... where may i find one? or the best place i should say

Re: shorten bolt throw for savage

that will be the only cheep of this build.would love to have a black bolt but not worth the extra bucks at this time , how long would duracoat last on the bolt? i think it might shave off rather quick dont u think?

Re: shorten bolt throw for savage

Help me out here. Is this a stagger fed action or center fed action? Are you going to block in a short action mag box in the LA magwell? Food for thought, the feed lips on a long action magbox won't allow you to us an extended front baffle, there will be nothing to hold the round from popping up. The 243 will feed fine from the 30-06 magbox. savage did it for years and there are many Savages with 308 based cartridges running just fine the way they are.

Re: shorten bolt throw for savage

cant remember if its a stagger fed i think it is have to look, but i dont plan on useing the mag box , goin to use a single shot follower. but it needs to stay long action action to use the mag box

Re: shorten bolt throw for savage

IIRC, the Stevens 200 is a copy of the old 110 series that had the same bolt for both long and short actions (single action length; long, stagger feed). So a Bolt baffle swap and swapping out the box mag should work...

But on those old long actions, the mag opening was the short action length. Only short action magazines would fit.

I have a LH one that I built my 338 Edge on. Short action single shot follower worked well.

you remember wrong... the stevens 200 is exactly the same as the Savages made at the same time... just w/o the accutrigger, and it's not polished as much...

it's available in both long and short action models, and centerfeed

Hence my use of "IIRC". I stand corrected...
