I have a buddy at work who has put together a new M4; and is now looking into an optic for it. He wants a varible power optic and has a budget of around 600. He has recently found a "sightron" optic. I've never heard of this brand, but I know that this site has a wealth of knowledge. Anybody out there have any expeirence with these? If they're not that good, can I get some suggestions on some to point him in the right direction?
...I've tried to talk him into saving up more money and going with an ACOG, but he wants something soon...

Re: sightron reviews?

I too am curious about Sightron optics. I've seen them all over ebay and often wondered about them, but i always passed them off as another chinese doorstop. I would love to hear some first hand reviews.

Re: sightron reviews?

I have a couple of Sightron SIII, and I have compared these to the Viper PST and Nightforce NSX.

The Sightrons are far from a Chinese Doorstop. I had mine out last weekend making hits at 1108 yards. The first 3 shots were all hits.

I have one scope on my 6.5 Creedmoor and another on my Tikka 7mm Mag. The Tikka is light and the 7mm Mag has lots of recoil. The sightron has held up fine. the nightforsce seems to be built more rugged, but the Sightron has held up fine to recoil and use in matches.

My gunsmith measured the scope and the MOA reticle was spot on. The scope tracking has repeatable zero. The tracking measured a 2% error rate. My gunsmith said the Nightforces usually have a much higher tracking error.

My friend that has the Viper PST has commented that the Sightron glass is clearer than his Viper. He is building up a new gun and ordered up a Sightron SIII for it.

I have compared my Sightron to the Nightforce NSX. The clarity of the glass seems the same on both scopes. The Nightforce had an advantage when looking through heavy mirage though. I think the Nightforce has slightly better contrast.

Overall, the Sightron has good glass (between the Viper and Nightforce), very good tracking, and is pretty durable. I sometimes consider the Nightforce NSX, then stop because the from what I have seen the improvement is very slight, and the cost difference is significant (~$1000).

Re: sightron reviews?

I have a Sightron Slll Tactical 6x24x50mm. It's the mil-dot reticle with .1 mil clicks. The glass is execellent and the tracking has been spot on.

Re: sightron reviews?

If you search I'm sure you'll find pages of opinions on Sightrons.

I have three 10-50x60 SIIIs. They are excellent. I really like the new LRMOA reticle and tactical knobs.

At 600 yards, the SIII was just BARELY worse at seeing bulletholes than my 12-42 NSX.

Re: sightron reviews?

I have a Sightron SIII 1.5-6x50 on my Daniel Defense. Great scope for the money.

Re: sightron reviews?

Are some of you so clueless or helpless that you can't use the SEARCH function, on this and all the other shooting forums available through simply a GOOGLE search? Sightron has been around since at least 1999 when I bought my first one. Do you clueless/helpless types still have your mommies dropping you off at school, as you get ready for the senior prom? Use the SEARCH function. Show some initiative fer crissakes.

Re: sightron reviews?

Ohhh, I'll bet you take some heat for that one NaHa.
But I agree with you.
Simply typing 'sightron scope reviews' into google brings up 200,000 hits.
What amazes me is that people are computer savvy enough to find a place like the Hide...log on and register...yet can't do a simple search.
Personally (and I'll take heat now) it's due to lazyness.
I always love the threads on forums that go, "I have a term paper due on XYZ...can you guys give all the info I need (so I can just cut and paste)"
And they genuinely think they've done the assignment.
Okay...end of rant.

Re: sightron reviews?

I have several Sightrons both SII and SIII. They are very clear very bright glass. Tracking on mine has always been accruate and repeatable. Two of them are on smallbore silhouette rifles (one annie 54-18 and one Kimber K22). For silhouette shooting it is all about setting repeatability. Many of the top shooters use Sightron (the others use Leupold).

Re: sightron reviews?

SIII 8-32X56 LRMOA sitting on a custom 300RUM and the scope works perfect. Great bang for the buck....If you don't like these you are nearing the " scope snob" realm......Good Luck with your decision.

Re: sightron reviews?

While I don't have extensive use of their whole product lineup, the SIII glass is great for the money. In past posts I've been adamant that the PST and SIII glass was close; however after doing a resolution test this evening in low light I can give Sightron SIII the clear edge. The SIII (LRMD) reticle isn't as nice as the EBR reticle of the PST, but the resolution difference was obvious to myself and the 3 others that were assisting me.

Even though the Sightron doesn't have the zero stop or illumination (my model), it is still a great scope. I still love my PST, but if it came down to glass with no input based on additional features, it would be a Sightron every time in the sub 800$ category.

If the Sightron is in your price point, I highly doubt that you would be disappointed with the overall glass quality and tracking.

Re: sightron reviews?

I've got a SIII 6x24-50 I really like the only complaint I have is that at 24 power it seems its hard to keep full sight picture maybe there is a term for this but you really have to hunt for the perfect eye relief. If you turn it down to 20 it's much easier. I actually just sold it to a friend and I am torn between getting another sightron maybe with the moa reticle or trying a viper PST.

Re: sightron reviews?

NaHa-
Sir-I'm NOT clueless or helpless...but I DO value other's opinions; especially on an optic that MAY be backing me up to save MY life. I would hope that instead of posting something rude, you would give your view on your optic. I thought that those on this site gave solid opinions and were quiet professionals who were glad to give valuable insight to those of us who may need this gear to save our lives; but I guess I'm mistaken in your particular case. The main reason why I go to this site is that I trust it; in the past I've been given some solid advice on everything dealing with weapons/ammo. IF I were lazy, I wouldn't take the time to keep up with these posts. For those of you who've chosen not to be rude, thanks for your input-I'll pass it on to my buddy; I think this is the way he wants to go.

Re: sightron reviews?

Thats the funny thing about the internet, you never know who the rude guy belittling you is

Its hard to take it seiously, but most of us form a mental image pretty fast.

I've always been a loyal Leupold and US Optics customer, never really occured to me to research Sightron as a serious duty daysight. Just an unfamiliar name, considering the huge variety of equipment people have been using the last few years.

It's not that i'd ever heard anything bad, just never saw one on the issue gun of any of our guys, allies or any civvie contractors going back to 1995, so its an unfamiliar name in optics.

I was interested enough in how they hold up to click on this post, just never heard of them or had enough interest in them to get on the internet and start using the search function.

I never thought of myself as clueless or needing my mommy to teach me how to research optics, guess I should refer to the internet more often in order to learn my own limitations.

Re: sightron reviews?

I recently acquired an SIII in 8-32x56 LRMOA-2 and it is very nice. Glass and assembly is done in Japan. Sightron may not have the same brand recognition as Leupold, Bushnell, Vortex, Trijicon etc... but I assure you that you get what you pay for from them. I cannot attest to the rest of the S series but the SIII's has glass that betters the likes of much of Bushnell Tactical, Leupold's vx-3/vx-r and several others and rivals more expensive competitors.

Also to note: I recall from a previous conversation with them that they are coming up on the 20th year (anniversary) of being in business.

I just added a few pics (through scope, reticle, turrets etc.. )to a thread about this particular model. There's a bit of information and others opinions.

Here's a link if your interested click here

Hope it's helpful

Good luck with your search-

Re: sightron reviews?

They have 2 new illuminated mil based reticles for high power, an additional non illuminated moa reticle, and an illuminated moa reticle for their 1-7.

The new reticles are here below to see in this thread. Has their layout and subtension information.
