Hi guys, I have been reading fervently but thought I would just toss this out there. I have a 20" 308 AR-10 that I am wanting to do some long range shooting with. I have been shooting Three Gun for just short of a decade and my buddy wants me to come shoot F Class with him.

I want something with a Horus type recticle or something similar. Not decided on recticle yet. Illumination would be nice but not a must. Zero stops would be nice but not a must. Mil/Mil, and First Focal Plane.

It seems like there quite a few NF scopes that are being sold in the EE on the Hide that fit some of what I detailed above. I see a few USO scopes that come close to that but frankly I get lost in all the models and options and dont know exactly what I am looking at.

I was looking at the Bushnell HDMR and that seemed pretty strait forward.

I was also looking at the Vortex Razor but it seems to be $400 outside my price range.

I want something that will let me shoot out to 1000 yards but I dont anticipate shooting over 600 in almost all cases.

So suggestions, ideas, fly by sarcastic remarks welcome.

One last thing, I am not gentle on guns, I anticipate this gun getting slung up and carried around. This wont be treated like a safe queen so whatever I buy needs to be able to stand up to me, and the abuse my guns go through.

Re: $1500 To Spend. Need A Scope For A 308 SASS M110

HDMR or the SWFA SS 5-20x50 would fit your requirements and budget, and both be able to take the usage too. The majority of the NF you're seeing in there will be second focal plane inside your price range, and I've never seen an F1 that was close to $1500, even used.

At the ranges and types of shooting you want to do, I would definitely recommend at least 15x on the top end. Just know with that setup you're going to be far from competitive in F-Class with your buddy, but it should be a lot of fun and good in learning the wind calls.

Bushnell HDMR... Built like a tank.. Bright, clear glass.. Excellent value for money.

+1, you could probably use it to drive tent stakes and not lose your zero

Save up a few hundred more and buy a used Nightforce. You will be glad you did.

Re: $1500 To Spend. Need A Scope For A 308 SASS M110

Ok getting lots of votes for the HDMR. I was looking and I was narrowing down to the Horus Recticle & the G2 Mil. What do you guys think of each?

There is a price difference between them as well. The Horus is $150 more than the G2. I really cant understand why unless the Horus costs more to create for some reason

Re: $1500 To Spend. Need A Scope For A 308 SASS M110

Horus demands a $400 fee for the use of their reticle, or at least that was the case in the past with USO. If you are a fan of the Horus system, the H59 is a good choice.

I can tell you from first hand experience, the Bushnell DMR is a great scope, solid construction with reliable tracking, good glass and IMO its the best optic in its price range. The HDMR is the Horus version, the others are DMRs but often refered to as HDMRs.

Captain Kirk, I am not a fan of either system, since I have never used them. Is the Horus worth it or will I be just fine with the G2?

I am a literal know nothing about either system. All this is fresh to me.

Re: $1500 To Spend. Need A Scope For A 308 SASS M110

The G2 is fine for a holdover reticule some people say it doesn't have enough wind holds though. I didn't like the HDMR for the eyebox it felt too tight, the new razor eyepiece is much more forgiving. Plenty of guys are loving the HDMR scopes though including people I've known who are super picky/able to break a rubber ball types.

Re: $1500 To Spend. Need A Scope For A 308 SASS M110

I have the Busnell DMR with the G2 retical, and i love it. This scope is not really ment for shooting groups, it was made to get on target fast with accurate hold overs and it does this very well. But once you get used to it, you can shoot very tight groups as well. The horus to me is very busy and not good for shooting groups, so i chose the G2 best of both worlds IMHO. My only gripe would be eye relief can be touchy. Hope this helps.

Yes, that HDMR is a beautiful scope.

Re: $1500 To Spend. Need A Scope For A 308 SASS M110

I guess I'll be the minority and put in a +1 for the Super Sniper, I love mine

Re: $1500 To Spend. Need A Scope For A 308 SASS M110

I love my 5-20x50 SS although it doesnt have a christmas tree reticle other then that its a great scope hurky and clear.

Re: $1500 To Spend. Need A Scope For A 308 SASS M110

The christmas tree reticle is nice and all, but honestly most people will never use it. I too once thought I absolutely needed it but came to the realization that I pretty much always dial my elevation. The only time I would ever hold both elevation and wind would be because I'm forced to from a stage requirement in a match.

Bottom line is the SS does everything I need it to, just be sure to take an honest look at your requirements. Now, with having said that, the Bushnell looks like an awesome scope also and as seen above, has received nothing but glowing reports. Isn't it fun having great options to choose from?

Re: $1500 To Spend. Need A Scope For A 308 SASS M110

That HDMR seems very easy to use, I might have to pick one up in the future. I like reticule that are easy to use like that.

Re: $1500 To Spend. Need A Scope For A 308 SASS M110

Thank you all for your input. I coincidentally pulled the trigger at Liberty before checking this thread update. I went with the G2 HDMR. So many informative videos on youtube, lots of write ups, it seems like the best optic in its price range. Saved $300 by buying from Liberty, which always makes me feel good to get a deal. After you have bought at wholesale for years, it is hard to pay retail. Very excited to get this mounted on the gun and start working up loads.

This is really a whole new experience for me. Shooting three gun and taking rifles courses over the years has all been about running and gunning.

My buddies work at Badger, I am sure I can get a set of rings from them. Would you recommend their rings or should I be considering something differing for this scope?

Re: $1500 To Spend. Need A Scope For A 308 SASS M110

The Badger 34mm Uni-mount is good. Probably go with that since you might get a deal on it. It has 20 moa built in. It was designed for the Bushnell DMR scope to mount on the GAP-10 but it works on a flat top upper also (objective sits close to rail but it does clear).

Perfect for all AR type rifles needing 20 MOA for LR Travel.

Last two purchases left for this set up are bipod and trigger.

-Was thinking of a Geissele trigger?
-Atlas Bipod?

Re: $1500 To Spend. Need A Scope For A 308 SASS M110

Yes and yes.

I have Timneys and Atlas' but I hear a lot of good things about the Geissele triggers

Re: $1500 To Spend. Need A Scope For A 308 SASS M110

Red Dirt, thank you very much. That was very informative. Seems like the Badger Unimount is the way to go. I love visiting their shop, everything they make just looks so well engineered. I might pick up some of their ambi safeties while I am there.

Re: $1500 To Spend. Need A Scope For A 308 SASS M110

No problem. Didn't know they made those. Grab one for me haha

Re: $1500 To Spend. Need A Scope For A 308 SASS M110

Leupold Mk4 M5 30mm TMR is right at $1500, awesome scope.
