I just purchased a Barrett MRAD, have a Leupold 6.5-20x50 scope and want to know if it worth the money to get a BORS system? I notice that it doesn't support the windage knob so at longer ranges that would still have to be calculated and done by hand. What is the downside to this system?

Re: To BORS or not to BORS

Personal opinion here, but thats alot of money to pay for somthing you can easily do yourself. I have no issues paying whatever it takes to make my shots better, I just dont think BORS is it

Re: To BORS or not to BORS

What's the downside? It's expensive, it adds weight, it does something you can do yourself for cheaper. Buy a Kestral and a ballistics calculator, and send me the extra money you would have spent on the BORS

however, if you're honestly just going for the "cool factor" with all the Barrett accessories, then that's what you gotta do to be satisfied.

Re: To BORS or not to BORS

I have a Kestral and I use the Shooter app and sometimes KA Bulletflight. Cool factor is the TBAC can that is in jail waiting on the ATF. Remau308, do you have a place to shoot long range near you?

Re: To BORS or not to BORS

There's a few friends properties to shoot 500 yards- 700 yards, and there's a couple 1000 yard competitions relatively close including the Hardrock competition here in Opelika. However, I have one friend in Georgia who has a farm with over 1600 yards flat terrain to shoot at. It's pretty rare to find much over 500 yards, much less over 1000 or even 1500 yards.

Re: To BORS or not to BORS

I've had a Barrett MRAD for 6 months and initially had Leupold MK4 in case I wanted the BORS. However, once I got out and started shooting found it was much easier to use my Kestrel and ballistics program. As mentioned above, not too easy to find > 1000 yds to shoot. Decided on spending my funds on March FX 5X40 56mm and haven't looked back. Have only shot to 830 yds so far, since I'm new to LR shooting, but able to nail a 9 inch disk regularly. also have begun shooting regularly in 500 yd 60 shot prone FTR matches-great fun. In short, do not think the BORS would be as flexible as doing it yourself with other equipment, which you can also use with other rifles.

Thanks everyone for the input. What ballistic programs do you recommend?

Re: To BORS or not to BORS

I like Ballistic AE for iPhone and iPad, but much better ones on PDA's, just haven't researched it that much. I found it was helpful to get the Magpul Dynamics Precision Rifle DVD set on Amazon. Lots of good information to watch over and over-PDAs discussed there. Also getting into hand loading due to ammo scarcity and cost. Don't see that trend changing soon!!! Good luck. You can PM me if you have other questions. I log on here all most every day. Wwould also suggest a level and suppressor.
