I am new to reloading, I have been researching, reading, etc for a few months before I started. I am working on some 1x fired cases out of my RRA LAR-8. I noticed a small dent around the neck of the case, some of the cases had a small marking on them before I sized them but it seems as I did more it got worst. Here is a picture, but its kind of hard to see.

I am using a RCBS Rock Chucker press with RCBS FL .308 dies. I only did about 25 cases tonight and at least half of them have these marks with some being worse than others. They are Remington brass if it matters. Any help is appreciated as I am not sure these are safe to continue reloading with the "dents" in them.

Re: .308 Resizing Die and Dents

I'm new to reloading as well, but I just took an NRA reloading class this weekend and they said this could happen if you use too much lube or have some on the neck or shoulders of the case. I could be completely wrong, but you never know.

Re: .308 Resizing Die and Dents

It may be trying to bump the neck back too much. Back the die off and crank it down in small increments until its not causing any damage and still sizing them properly.

Get a case gauge and use it for this purpose. You will thank me later..

Re: .308 Resizing Die and Dents

Yep to much lube use a thiner oil or less and make sure to clean out the die of any exsess lube..... Load them and shoot it the dents will come right out.

Re: .308 Resizing Die and Dents

When I set the die, I put the handle all the way down, touched the die down to the shell plate then turned it down about 1/8 turn (per my die manuals since non-carbide).

As far as case lube, would have never thought of this and after reading your posts I see a lot of people have issues with Hornady one-shot lube, what other lube is recommended?

Also when applying the lube, should I wait a period of time before sizing? I was not waiting, I would queue up 6 rounds, lube them then start sizing.

@Nicko-so these are still safe to shoot even though they have the dents in them?

Thanks for all of the help here.

Re: .308 Resizing Die and Dents

As far as lube just put very little on and work the press slow and add more as needed and once the die has lube in it some times I just lube the base of the shell after 20-30 rds. As far as being safe yea they will still shoot fine and the dents will come right out and be ready to resize next load I wouldn't shoot a competition or trust them to shoot perfect but they will still shoot just fine.

Re: .308 Resizing Die and Dents

I guess I never think about lube since I primarily use dillon lube. Spray, wait a few mins and go to work...

Re: .308 Resizing Die and Dents

I will try that tonight and do another small batch to see if any better results. I think I was putting too much lube on the cases around the neck. Never really thought about using too much lube.

Re: .308 Resizing Die and Dents

There should be a hole in the side of your die to let air out, make sure that isn't plugged.

Re: .308 Resizing Die and Dents

I like Rob's method. Dump cases in a gallon zip lock bag, squirt some Hornady One Shot in there, roll the cases around, a little more one shot, then dump them in a cardboard box to dry for a few seconds and go.

Never had a case dent doing that. Had several before switching to one shot.
