Storing ammo help

Quick question. I live in Houston, Tx where humidity is very high and temps get hot as well. Ive got all my ammo stored in the garage on a shelf and I throw a couple of those little humidity pack things up on the shelf near the ammo every now and then. Im just wondering if it is ok to keep it there or if it needs to be inside?

I dont really want to move it all into my closet unless yall say it is a must. Sometimes my garage floor will "sweat" because of the humidity and differences in outside/garage temps....not often, but sometimes.

So is it ok where its at? Should I move it inside? Do they make an ammo box, or footlocker type deal that would keep humidity out?

Please advise. It would suck to have thousands of dollars of ammo not work properly years down the road. Thanks.

Re: Storing ammo help

Surplus ammo cans with desiccant packs might be better than just on the shelf but I would try to get that stuff stored indoors in climate controlled environment.

I store most of mine in a big steel storage box like the ones you see on construction job sites - same thing there with large desiccant packs and it is in a climate controlled (indoor) environment.

Re: Storing ammo help

I would put the desiccant inside the ammo cans, AND move the ammo indoors. Especially if the temperature variance outside is enough to make the garage floor sweat.

With the price of ammo so high, it would be a shame to have the ammo deteriorate because of a preventable situation.

Re: Storing ammo help

I'll pay the shipping to my home and store it for you, it was a cool -16 last nite. Just trying to help a guy out.

Re: Storing ammo help

Cool and dry is what ammo likes. No huge temp swings and humidity are bad. Keep it dry and cool and it will last longer than you will.

Re: Storing ammo help

Well I guess I'll make room in one of the closets and move it indoors. I would imagine South Houston coastal weather is about as bad as it gets for storing ammo in the garage.

Thanks
