So heres my dilemma. I built a 223 AR for last years trip, went all out, chambered my own barrel, Young Mfg bolt, Jewell Trigger, UBR stock. The thing shoots lights out with the 53gn Vmax I shoot out of it.

This is the problem, I also have a 22-250 I built that puts on so much better of a show than the 223. Granted, the AR will kill them no problem, and every once in awhile youll get a good show, but the 250 is just on a whole other level. So basically I just end up shooting the 250 the whole time, though I do like the advantages of the AR and higher capacity/rapid fire for running dogs.

If youve pdogged before you know that kills are only fun for the first hour, then you need to start flipping and throwing to have serious fun.

Heres the question. What higher velocity options are there on an AR15 platform? I see Olympic does a 22-250, which would be AWESOME, but takes proprietary mags and lower. I dont want a 204, weve had an R15 in our group and he sold it because it failed to throw them.

Anything 6mm or something? Thanks!

DTech chambers the hot rods and knows what he is doing.

RWS has necked down the Grendel to .22 for spectacular results

Specialized Dynamics or Liberty Arms would be good to talk to also

Re: Options for Pdog AR

Just learn to run that bolt a little faster Jon and you don't need an AR.

On a serious note a .243 running 58 grain Vmax would be a sweet setup.

Re: Options for Pdog AR

Im liking the 6mm AR, anybody have one of these?

58gn Vmax out of that should be cooking at 22-250 velocities

Re: Options for Pdog AR

The 243 running the heavier varmint bullets would be nice, maybe 60-70gr range. They would be a little heavier and buck the wind a little better. You should be able to get them to the 3200-3600 fps range.

Re: Options for Pdog AR

I like a 5.56 set up for heavies and shooting 77SMK's. Way cheaper to shoot a lot than anything but a .22 rimfire and much better in the wind and at distance than the loads with bullets in the 50's. Low enough recoil to watch hits and shoot all day with no fatigue.

243 requires AR10 if Im not mistaken right?

Maybe you didnt read the original post.

Ive already done the 223 thing and less than impressive on Pdogs, and 77 SMK's are definitely not going to help that.

Yes so does the 22-250.

Re: Options for Pdog AR

With staying with the AR-15 platform, I think the 6mmAR Turbo might be interesting. They say it will push a 105gr Amax to 2900fps. It's a 6mmAR in Ackley Improved.

"Maybe you didn't read the original post"

What a piss-poor asinine response to somebody attempting to offer an opinion in a helpful tone from personal experience. Velocity is not everything in the recipe for your "show" and shooting 53 Vmax's is a but a miniscule part of the ".223 thing".

Re: Options for Pdog AR

Sorry, that came across bad.

I just meant to say Ive tried the 223 thing and am looking for something to shoot varmint type bullets faster.

A buddy was shooting the 77 smk out of a 223WSSM at probably 3400 and 90% of hits were pass throughs. No argument they are a great option if you want longer range hits in wind, but we tend to keep the majority of our shots to within 200yds anyway to increase hit % that way.

I appreciate your response and apologize for the way mine came across.

Have you heard if the turbo feeds in an AR well?

I thought I saw in some reading that they developed that more for bolt guns, I wouldnt think the ackley would feed well out of an AR style mag...could be wrong though.

Re: Options for Pdog AR

Haven't heard anything on how it feeds or anything else about it, for that matter. I've been getting parts together to build a 6mm something bolt gun, but have thought about switching to 6mm AR. May not be able to build one latter. The 6mmAR would fit the bill, I just have a fondness for AI cartridges.

AR performance had several barrels for 243 LBC, basically a straight neck down of a 6.5 Grendel. I got one a few weeks ago. I'm in the process of working up loads and getting it threaded for a suppressor so I haven't shot it much. I'm thinking it should be the ticket for pdogs. Fast with lighter bullets and able to shot heavier bullets with a better BC when it gets windy.

I know there is a guy here who has a 6pdk( necked down 6.8) he was shooting 90 grain bullets in the 2900 range. Shoot that 58 grain vmax loaded hot and that should give you a show.
