ok iv got a blank 30 cal , 1 in 12 twist straight taper.cant make up mind, i have a 308, thinking about 300 wsm , 30-06 , whantin some ideas, 300 yard gun max

What's the intended use? If just target shooting at up to 300 yards, stick with .308 for cheap components.

i got a 308 , it will be built off of my old stevens 200 in 30-06. was thinking 30-06 with lite grain bullets like 147-155

nothing i guess , just got a chance to build a semi custom from some extra cash, just want something kinda simple and different. i seen a guy with a build like im doin in 7.62x39, kinda cool. it shot really good at 200 yards. not sur how far that round is good for at longer range. could do a 30 br. dont know much about them tho

308 is probaby the best choice for what your looking to do, but I get wanting to build something cool and different.
Do you have a donor action already? and is it a LA or SA that will certainly help you narrow down your choices if so.
303 British would be a fun one.

300yd max? Try and sell that 30-06 action for a 223 action and build something on that case head. Really, even a 308 at that distance is burning double the powder you really need.
Or, build a semi-custom 30-06, sell the 308 and turn it into an 8tw 223.
Even with a 12tw that 30-06 stuffed to the gills is a 1300yd caliber, there's just so much performance there on tap to go to waste.

well the donor action has some personal value to it so i want to keep it , its a long action, no big deal, im useing a single shot follower. iv got a 303 brit.at my range we can shoot out to 1000 yards, i said 300 because i thought that it will be a while be4 im good enough to move out further. im thinking more. 300 wsm or 30-06 . whats the advantages of 300wsm over the 300mag & 30-06

30-06, I love mine. 300 yrd is kinda short but if you get the chance you can stretch out. Recoil not bad.

300yds is nothing for those calibers. I'd sell/trade the barrel for a 6 or 6.5 and do a .243 or .260. Or as mentioned, get a .223 bolt head and go .223. You can stick with the long action on all of those, just not as efficient. Actually may not be able to the the .223 with a box mag???

He wants to build a new gun, because he has the funds.
He doesn't want some caliber outside of .30, because he already has a barrel for it.
Just offer suggestions for what .30 caliber round he should chamber it in. That's all he's asking.

Go with a 300winmag. With a good brake on it, it wont kick as hard as an .06. Load up some light loads and push em fast if you want, or go with the 210g Bergers and fling em out to 1200yds.

Keep the barrel until your current .308 is burned out.
Buy another 1 in 10 twist barrel for your long action build so you can shoot the heavier bullets.

with a 12 twist your gona be limited to 175-180 grainers max, just depends on how fast you want to fling them (308,30-06,300WM,300WSM). Id go short barrel 308 myself and shoot 155 Palma SMK's

This is a great thought. I always wanted a 30-06 myself, but with all the other offering I always went elsewhere. I finally built a 30-06 for myself on a semi budget. Well, all I can say is that I'm very impressed with it. The biggest difference in mine is that my barrel is a 1 in 10. On its first outing I had no trouble hitting a gong at 1000 yards. The gong at 565 yards became some what boring.

In short, my vote is the 30-06 in your case.

Hey Ozzie, good to hear from you and glad you're enjoying that 30-06, I don't have a STD bolt face long action anymore or I'd be building another -06 instead of the 300 winny... Guess I'll just have to buy another receiver
