I just found a Rem 700, 300WinMag 26 HB, in a HS precision Stock, NIB, at buds gun shop for $985.00. This seems like a good deal, I was would like to hear from some of the experts here on the sniper's hide, is this a good deal? Is this a good rifle, considering price etc.?

Sounds good to me. I have seen .300win mag pss's rifles shoot very well out to a mile. I do not think you could go wrong with it. The .300 win mag is a great round and is very reasonable to load for. Do it!

Re: 700 police 300 win mag 26in HB

A friend of mine bought one of those from Buds. Paid about that much for it but it looked like shit when he got it out of the box. Had scrapes and nicks up and down the barrel. Looked like it had been on display and handled quite a bit by tire kickers.
Other than that it seems like a good gun. If you're going to shoot the thing and not worry about cosmetics then get one. If you want a nice looking gun to show your friends then there are better rifles.

Honestly though for that kind of money I'd beg or borrow a couple hundred more dollars and buy a 5R SS mil spec in .300 WM. It's a much nicer gun for not much more money. Of course it only comes in stainless with the HS stock so if black's more your thing...

Ask yourself if you really need a magnum; especially one that weighs nine pounds and has no cheek piece.

Re: 700 police 300 win mag 26in HB

depends on what you'd use it for. As mentioned, do you need a 300WM or just want one?

Is it for hunting, 1K+ yard target, both. If hunting what will you hunt and how far a shot...be reasonable on this last part, many want to shoot deer at 1k but don't really have the skill to do so.

As to the quality of the gun...you'll like it. It's a little rough but nothing that can't be fixed. Accuracy? Plenty accurate to get into long range shooting.

Cheek Piece issue? Mouse pad and duct tape, tie-on...or have it cut and hardware installed.

I say go for it. I have one and love mine. Go with a good brand of FFP scope and you will be all set.

That's about what I paid in Dec of '08 (sold some commie crap for double and bought the rifle & scope; thanks obama

). It's been a good rifle. Mine has the older x-mark that adjusts out of the stock; was able to get a nice, crisp & safe trigger pull.

If you already have a lot of time behind a rifle, recoil shouldn't be an issue. If you're rough on proper position, it will beat you up a little.

My rifle shot well with 190smk's and 208 amax's. I'd like to claim some crazy accurate groups, but I never consistently had any. Working up loads (about the only time I would shoot for groups), 4 out of 5 would be less than 1 moa, but almost always have 1 shot that would about double that. Probably me, not the rifle. Good enough for internet sub-moa...

Only complaint I can think of is rough bolt operation. The bolt fit a little loose and could bind when starting to move it forward to load a rd. Bolt closure also felt rough and kinda like it had stages as it closed. I worked the bolt with a little (very little) lapping compound. I didn't really know what I was doing, but it did make bolt operation feel better.

The throat is a little shorter than my Rem 700 hunting rifles; I don't know if that's by design or just the way it worked out when Rem cut it. The factory mag has plenty of room to seat the 208 amax all the way to rifling, even after a couple tho down the barrel (but I seat them a little off the rifling). The chamber must be a little on the tight side because I get high velocities at low to mid range data. Again, I don't know if that's by design or just the way it worked out.

I've enjoyed the rifle. When shooting w/ friends, it's fun to watch the plate swing when they shoot, then the boomer sends it flailing...

</div></div>I've heard a few people tell me that until last month they thought they could never afford a quality precision rifle and premium scope, but that after selling a few AKs for thousands of dollars - bought a few years ago for $300 each - they are now in the market for quality equipment.

OP, now would be the time to sell crappy rifles in order to purchase quality ones you would not otherwise be in a position to afford.
