I did a search but didn't come up with much on what I was looking for.. I figured I'm not using the right words.

Anyhow I have a Winchester Classic Receiver and Benchmark stainless barrel I am wanting to have some sort of nitride coating. Its built just need to get it to CDI for DBM and then send for finishing. I do my own Cerakotng and am pretty decent at it. I would like to have something different this round though. I also thought about Black T, Rifle is a hunting stick, Its in a Boyds stock right now but plans include a McM HTG for her.

Any thoughts on finishes other than spray/bakes?

Poke take a look at Robar (http://www.robarguns.com/). I use them to coat bolts and know people who have guns done by them. They have several finishes to choose from. There's I beleive are all chemical dipped and not painted. I have really like what I got from them.

    Re: Barrel/Action finish...

If you're referring to a Melonite (nitrocarburizing-AKA Nitriding) type finish, you won't be able to do both the barrel and action at the same time due to the different steels.

With carbon steel the temps reach around 1050degF but with stainless it would typically be done at a reduced temperature, 700-900degF(I believe closer to 900 for 416R)

Also, you'll want to have all work finished on the gun prior to nitriding- Lapping action, barrel etc...you can't "break-in" a barrel that has been nitrided...the stuff is too hard.

remember nitriding isn't a finish- it's a surface hardening process.

    Re: Barrel/Action finish...

Sorry if you though my comment was directed towards you...it was not. I know NP3 isn't nitriding, it's an actual coating/finish...very good one at that.

    anyone ever use plasma nitriding?

    Re: Barrel/Action finish...

Melonite for the barrel and IonBond on the action.

    Re: Barrel/Action finish...

Got the gun back today and plan on running 20-30 rounds through it tomorrow. I have a MK4 to put on it but didn't have a way to mount the damn thing..... Tons of 30mm rings and rem bases but no method to get it onto a Winny.

Right now I am leaning to Black T and have a McM Supergrade stock on order. Should turn out to be a nice firepoker.

Barrel length turned out to be 30" with the MB though....

    Re: Barrel/Action finish...

Nothing wrong with black-T finish but I'd seriously consider the Melonite bbl and Ion-bond receiver...meloneite will increase barrel life.

The only downside to Melonite is that you'll lose some of the corrosion resistance of the stainless so you'll need to keep it a little oiled. But if I were to do melonite and had the Cerakote stuff...I'd simply cerakote in what ever color/pattern I liked when it came back...get the best of both worlds

That there is a High Value well bred Labrador Dog....

Turns out she's a real fuckin window licker!!! And the literal definition of a home wrecker.... My wife wanted new flooring for the house, she took care of that along with turning two doors into toothpicks when she got locked into 2 bedrooms on 2 occasions....

And this little fellow is the reason anything wood in my house no longer has the corners... Its odd he has 2 rows of teeth...
