Gunsmithing Rem 700 Bolt Nose Clearance question

So I was measuring a Remington 700 barrel and bolt of mine today and the bolt has 41 thousands clearance according to the measurements around the bolt when it is in the bolt nose recess. This seems really excessive. What is the max clearance the bolt should have around it in the bolt nose recess?

Re: Rem 700 Bolt Nose Clearance question

Although .041" is in excess its certainly not an issue if its on the diameter, if its end clearence thats certainly something to address. On guns equipped with AR extractors your going to be running even more bolt clearence to accommodate extractor snap over.

On rebarrels I do using standard REM extractors I shoot for approx .008" clearence per side on the bolt nose clearences.

i like .010 clearance on the sides and .005 in the front. like 230 said, if you have an m16 type extractor, you will need a lot more clearance than normal.

Re: Rem 700 Bolt Nose Clearance question

Thanks for the replies. That measurement is around the bolt and that is total so that means there is about 20 1/5 thousands on each side of the bolt. Depth wise going into the chamber it has 5 thousands clearance from the end of the bolt to where the bolt nose recess stops. This rifle does not have a sako or M16 style extractor. I was thinking about cutting the tenon off and re chambering it but since you have that clearance with a sako style extractor from what you guys are saying I will probably just leave it alone. What do you guys think should I leave it alone? You guys ever wish you didn't measure anything? I know I wish I would not have measured this one it is going to bother me I just know it.

Yes, there are many times I wish I would not have measured somethings, some of those followed by a few choice words.

If you want the practice go for it, but it will not be an issue in any case. I would personally not worried about it on a stock factory rifle. Your time will be better spent doing it correctly when you decide to rebarrel.

This is on one of the customs I own but I am going to leave it and I will not be checking any of my other ones.

Re: Rem 700 Bolt Nose Clearance question

on a standard boltface, many times you can still get away with .010" over bolt nose diameter with a sako or m16 style extractor. in fact, i can't remember needing to go over that with a standard bolt face. magnum bolt face, absolutely.

you could get away without a counterbore and still safely fire the rifle and it would shoot exactly the same. the "three rings of steel" is remington's idea of additional safety if a case ruptures. i certainly wouldn't set a barrel back if the counterbore was 40 over the bolt nose diameter as long as the end clearance was close. if your end clearance is too much then you can run into unsupported case at the rear of the chamber which is a bad thing.

for a standard bolt face, i shoot for 10-15 over bolt nose diameter and 8-10 of end clearance on an untorqued barrel.
