OCW testing and wind

I was going out to do some OCW testing on my .243 today at my 100yd range (furthest I can get to this week). Wind is pretty gusty at 10-15mph. Would it be worthless to do OCW testing in these windy conditions or should it be no problem with the speedy .243 at only 100yds?

Re: OCW testing and wind

Unless the wind was at 12 or 6'OC, I wouldnt mess with it.

Re: OCW testing and wind

OCW may be really hard to judge at 100 yards regardless of wind or no wind. I like to shoot it at 300 yards plus. Obviously if longer range is not available you won't have that option.

I prefer to not have wind when shooting OCW, and I will typically wait for a calm day. I don't think wind makes much difference since you are looking for vertical stringing, but I have more confidence on a calm day.

Re: OCW testing and wind

OCW will not produce the tiniest of groups. That is not the purpose. You are looking for a node that is consistent in bullet placement. When I did OCW on my AW 260 barrel there were no clusters of one hole groups. When the node became evident and I did the seating depth testing my eyes were opened. At .0016" off the lands the OCW load is shooting tiny bugholes and holding up well at LR as well.
Better conditions are not always a blessing. Do your test when you can, wind or no.

Shooter ballistic app says .1 mil difference between 10 and 15 mph wind for me. I'd wait for a calm day.

Re: OCW testing and wind

Thanks guys, I had the itch bad to get out and get some trigger time on the day off so gave it a shot anyway. Turned out good despite the wind.. it was a 1:30 wind so not too bad and made me concentrate more, which was a good thing.
Loaded a second round in finer increments for what I think is the best node and will hit my longer range in the next week.
